A few really scary days…

June 22, 2016

You might have noticed I’ve been a little silent on the blog lately. But I want you to know it hasn’t been by choice. I’ve missed you dearly. Which is why I really must update you on what’s been going on in my world.

About a week and a half ago, I was rushed into emergency surgery.

My large intestine had somehow detached itself from my abdominal wall and twisted to the point where blood flow was dangerously restricted. A large section had to be removed. After several days of recovering in the hospital, I was able to go home which is where I am as I type these words.

I’ve been hesitant to explain too much about what happened to me because it’s honestly a crazy story. And I’m not really into crazy.

But, I treasure you as a friend and sometimes friends just need to be invited in and told the bottom line.

God miraculously saved my life.

I don’t say that with drama. I say it with tears in my eyes and the deepest gratitude in my heart.

The surgeon called me on Friday to tell me there was no sign of cancer in the pathology report. Praise God.

But then he said something else that I can’t stop thinking about. “Lysa, I don’t like throwing around the word miracle. But the fact you survived this is a miracle. The pathology report showed your cells were in a state of death.” I didn’t know what to say.

I had no words. Except “thank you.” Thank You, God. Thank you friends who prayed me through this. Thank you to this surgeon who finally figured out why I was in excruciating pain for days and days in that hospital bed.

Thank You that I still get to do life.

So, here I sit. But this quiet morning is different.

I have a sacred realization. And I have a complete refocus on just how precious every second of every day truly is.

Might we all dare to whisper “it’s a gift” to God today?

When the baby is crying and the deadlines are pressing and the stress is mounting and the enemy whispers “just get through this crappy day.” Look up and shame the enemy back to hell by acknowledging today is a gift.

A gift from a good, good Father. And then look, seek, and dive deeply into what a true gift it is.

Glad you are recovering, had something similar 2005 God healed me to but need to be careful ended up with a serious fungal infection that can’t seem to get rid of, see the book eat dirt by
Dr axe, very helpful. Like me you would have been pumped full of antibiotics. As well as healing pray for wisdom to deal with after the operation. Sometimes we forget that as I did Dr’s don’t tell you enough about what can happen after antibiotics. I had many other problems as well which put me on cortisone so hopefully and pray you don’t have the problems I had.
But will keep you in prayer for full recovery physical and mentally, Great to hear you are home and on the mend, may God bless you with a full recovery.

Praise God! Those two words speak volumes. His amazing grace still surprises me at the age of 50. Why? You still have work to do, my sister in Christ. Another story to be told.

I am part of the “She Speaks” Facebook page and let me tell you, word got out via the Facebook page and God’s girls started praying. When Satan tries so hard to defeat us, God’s Glory spreads like wild fire. Satan can not keep down God’s warrior girls!

Praying for you. Hope to see you next month…just do not push it.

Lysa, Thank You for sharing with us about your health miracle!!! I have wondered why you have not done any lessons or weekend wrap-ups at First5! It’s just so amazing how great our God is! Our family too experienced one of God’s miracles a month ago in the birth of baby Ryder who had serious birth complications. However, due to mostly God’s amazing grace and quick medical action at Duke Regional and then Duke NICU baby Ryder is a growing healthy 4 week old today!!! It just gives me goose-bumps to hear your health miracle! You will be in my prayers for a full recovery! I know all of us who participate in the First5 online Bible study will be so happy when you return! Please keep us posted on your recovery! In Christ’s love, Pat Cobb!

Through your ministry I have met some of the most beautiful women that have come beside me, encouraged me, inspired me, and loved me, and I have been able to do the same for some women as well. So thank you! ❤

Lysa , Life is Miraculous ! Thank God you are home and recovering.
I recently joined your blog and have been waiting to receive a message from you.. I have just finished a second bible study of yours at my church Merciful Redeemer in Mississauga Canada! This time reading your book Unglued.
I Loved the experience and connecting the scripture readings was so meaningful to me.

I am a 63 year( Young Lady) dealing this past 6 years with a rare degenerative brain disease called Cadasil for which there is no treatment. I had wanted to know if you had even written a book to help the sick. I had wished there was something about becoming unglued when dealing with illness. I am a former pediatrics nurse., who had to retire due to illness.
I have been dealing with my illness with meditative prayer instead of psychiatrists and drugs!
One week ago while on a walk I had a 13 minute time period happen where my memory disappeared and I woke up lost and confused having crossed two busy roads. I had taken a picture just before my memory loss which allowed me to know the time period missing. It is a disease of stroke and dementia so I am very scared.
I have been awake since 4 am this morning and after saying a rosary I felt I should spend some time reading scripture.. Your book Unglued was on my bedside table and I was going to reach for it , but turned on my iPad which I use to read scripture and seen your email. It was at the top of the list!
Reading your blog validated how much you could help others with the difficult times of illness. Wow! God always seems to answer my prayers. When I Trust in Him he answers.
So here I am writing my first blog ever at 6am knowing you understand completely. It just amazes me how things happen
like this. God must have been listening! I told one of the leaders that I was going to join your blog with this very question.
I also feel like I have received a Miracle because I continually am told ” Do not look too far into the Future” .
You are in my thoughts and prayers Lysa. Take care of yourself!
    Blessings
    Linda

Lysa, I posted this on your Instagram and will repeat it again because it has really encouraged me. I heard a missionary share one day that “A Christian is immortal until his work on earth is finished” and there is so much truth to that because in that statement we recognize the Sovereignty of God and His infinite ability to determine when our life ends. He is in control, as evidenced by the experience you shared. Your life was spared, your work is simply not finished yet. Praying for you this morning, for a complete and full recovery and for whatever your next steps will be.

Hi Lysa. So sorry to hear of this. I too know about the scary days. Mine was in 2011- 93 days in bed before I was diagnosed and then had part of my colon removed. 14 weeks recovering. There were many things that the Lord taught me during those 6 months. I listened to a lot of praise and worship music and journaled my way thru the hard days. One of the things I treasured and still do is that God does not grade us on our emotional roller coaster- I had good days and not so good days. I often felt guilty for days of doubt. The Holy Spirit let me know that He does not grade me on a scale of 1to10 on how I respond to Him. I was so relieved to know that He understands that I am but dust.
I know that He is healing you and that He has work for you to do in His perfect timing. Asking Him to continue to minister to you today and that He would raise you up to good health and healing.
    Love

I read this with chills and fear. I just went through something very similar to this with my husband. It too was emergency surgery, which is scary in itself, but the uncertainty was almost overwhelming. The very thing that got us through this situation was the visits and prayers of precious friends and the incredible mercy of a heavenly father. I was the crazy one – my husband said he had incredible peace while we waited for the news “was it or wasn’t it”. May God be with you through your healing. You will be in our prayers.

I just read a blog about a woman who was in a car accident and when offered plastic surgery for her scars, turned them down because she needed to be reminded of what she had been saved from- that her scars were part of her rescue story.
That her scars were her reminder to thank God for the rescue.

Praising God for rescuing you Lysa!

I must admit my heart was thumping in my chest as I read your blog about your surgery. How frightening for you, your family and for all of us out here in Proverbs 31 land!
Praising God for your rescue and your recovery!

You definitely need a trip to Target for something special just for you!

    Lysa,
I have never posted a comment on any website or blog anywhere in my life. This morning after reading your blog a wave of emotion came over me that was surprising considering we don’t know each other. I read your blog at red lights on my commute to work and wipes tear stains away. I had just been having quiet time with the God. Radio off and really trying to listen to Him. I prayed that He reveal himself to me. After our time I did a quick glance of my emails and came across your message. Lysa, I felt God nudging me to tell you what a treasure you have been to me. Your words whether on your blog, book or klove send me running straight into our Father’s arms. So despite the fact that we are many miles away and have never met for coffee you have encouraged a relationship with our Heavenly Father and I had to tell you. This morning I thanked our God for the gifts he has given you and that in return I was being gifted in being able to see God moving in and around me. Something tells me this is kinda long for a comment section… I will be praying for continued healing for you my friend and praised God for His hand in your life. Thanks for always being real and challenging me to run full force into Jesus.
Hugs from your sister in Christ!

Thank you for posting and wishing you a speedy recovery. I had a similar experience 3 months ago. Had pain in my hand and wound up having urgent spinal surgery due to permanent spinal damage they could see on MRI. They say if I had turned wrong or been bumped, I would have died (the problem was at the level of my breathing) or been completely paralyzed for life. Leading up to this quick surgery, I had cancellations of appointments that allowed me to be placed on the schedules immediately for EMG’s and MRI’s and then into surgery within 5 days. I was in a collar 24/7 for 3 months and am now healing well. I know I am truly blessed and had angels with me the whole way. I agree with every day being a blessing and know how lucky I am. God does work miracles every day!

    Hi Lysa!
Praise God you are okay…and we are so blessed to serve a GOD, a good GOD who is still in the business of miracles!!! After reading your blog post, I felt a strong nudge to write (which I never do). But, I am in awe of THE good gift of what GOD does each day. Our family has come to claim Jeremy Camp’s “Same Power ” song as our mantra. Just about one year ago, our 2 year old drowned in a pool. As I stood watching my mom and dad perform CPR on him, his purple and blue, completely lifeless body lay on the floor, I couldn’t believe my eyes…my little boy, gone…and in that moment, all I could scream was the name of JESUS. I pleaded with GOD not to take my little one, and after 12.5 minutes of CPR, he began throwing up and came back to life. Our family will never be the same, and we are so thankful for HIS miracles. Thank you for sharing your miracle! GOD is amazing! I’ll be praying for you and your family as you recover. God is a good, good Father.

    Hi Lysa,
I don’t typically comment on blogs as I am more likely to keep my comments to myself kind of girl but I really identified with your story. I had emergency surgery for diverticulitis in March and had a colon resection, with infection and long recovery. I really felt God allowed that to happen to show me how powerful He is, because he had all the details perfectly orchestrated and I am here to tell the story. It was a miracle in so many ways. My beautiful community loved me and my family, took care of us, fed us, held our hands, drove my children, cut my grass, picked up dog poop from my yard….I could go on and on about how well Jesus loved us for weeks during that horrible time. Jesus showed me how to love others better than I had ever been able and I am here to pass it on to others. I am praising God today for your miracle and I know He plans to have you here for a long time to praise Him and share your story too! Rest up and heal slowly so you can do that, it is a long road!

    Lysa,
I will say a prayer for your recovery. I know of the feeling, as I thanked God after
my surgery- when beyond all percentages, cancer was found in my lymph nodes,
The doctor had thought this additional surgery was not necessary, but it was up
to me. My husband said it was up to me-don’t even ask my opinion-he said. So I
prayed one whole weekend, and then had the surgery. I KNOW that God saved my
life! I had told Him that it was o.k. if I had done all the good He wanted me to do to
take me home. Now- I live each day to glorify Him! Each is a blessing, and I try
to give that blessing on to others. YOU have been a wonderful blessing in my life.
I have read many of your books, taught others from them, passed them on. To this
day, I still tell my feelings – “you’re not bossing me around today”! and when dealing
with a conflict-HGC! He is NOT done with you either, so get well-and keep on blessing
others! your friend in Christ, Amy

I did not know you were in the hospital. I had to be sent in emergency surgery after Thanksgiving. I had to go to the emergency room because I was in really bad pain. The next morning they had to do an emergency surgery. One of my intestine had wrapped around two hernias. I was in there I believe about 5 to 7 days. I went home and about 2 weeks later I ended up back in the hospital with diarrhea and I was dehydrated. I came home in about 3 days, and then after Christmas I was back in there again, because I had hardening of the bowels and was dehyrated again. This time I did not get to come home until New Years Day. I have to go back in the hospital again on August 5th to have another hernia removed. I know the Lord has really watched over me. I am glad that you are okay and are cancer free. I will continue to pray for you.

Thank you so much for this message. As I lay in bed reading this, I am so thankful for all of the crazy moments I have been having in my life. Just today, the enemy was using it to fuel the most horrible thoughts of running away, leaving my moody, crying babies (twins teething) add to that my hormones and it was the worst day ever! (With a dramatic tone) But really, it wasn’t. This too shall pass and I need to remember that I need grace as well as my children! We will make it with Gods help!! Praying for your recovery!

My Dear Sister in Christ Lysa,
I truly am grateful for our Lord for giving you this miracle. I understand also how precious our life here on earth is to our Lord. I am a faithful follower who reads your emails you always send out. Life on earth is very challenging and sometimes very hard and sometimes we don’t understand any of it. I’ve learned to say every day ——GOD IS GOOD! In every down there is an up, for every negative there IS a positive, for every bad there is a good. Yesterday was history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift, thats why they call it the present!!!! I never look back anymore just keep pressing on forward. One foot in front of the other will always lead us to God!!! Thank you Lord for Lysa and her faithful Christian writings so all of us can read and benefit by them. God bless you Lysa and my prayers for total healing are for you.

    Love, another sister in Christ,

    Lysa,
A year after I completed treatment for breast cancer ( several surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation), I had to have emergency surgery for a volvus in my intestine. There was no time to “prep” me for the surgery. I became septic and my surgical wound would not heal. I was in the hospital for over two weeks. I literally thought I was dying. After almost a year of cancer treatment previous to this, it paled in comparison to the recovery from this. I say all of this to say, I can relate to the gravity of your health issues. I am so glad your story has a happy ending as did mine! The Lord healed me completely and was near to me in my recovery. I pray that for you, too! God bless you!

I’m feeling a little bit out of my comfort zone. I don’t often comment on blogs and hey I haven’t seen too many guy names in the comments.
First I want to say how wonderful it is that you are doing better. Sounds like this was a pretty scary ordeal. God can definitely work miracles. I know this first hand. In December of 2012 I fell when a scaffold plank broke. I was unconscious for more than three days with a severe concussion. My perspective on life changed after that. I like to say that sometimes God just has to hit us in the head with a board to get our attention.
God Bless you and your ministry!

I am in the midst of a scare like you. In January I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a total surprise and shock. Six months later God has done miraculous healing in my life. I will not be cured of it, but I will be brought to a point of maintaining it. Through this whole ordeal I have had countless people praying for me. God’s healing is not only know to me but also them. I truly stand amazed at all God has done in my life. I do look at life differently now. Thank you for your willingness to share your story. It gave me the courage to share mine.

Thank you for reminding us that even though we may wake up feeling down, for whatever silly and insignificant reason we may have, that God has graciously handed us another day on a silver platter to enjoy and to love others.

I am thankful for 1)finding your blog today, 2)reading this post about your miracle. I don’t like crazy either. I’ve had too much of it in my life. You put the focus in the right place- God and the “sacred realization” (love that) He gave you about LIFE! Wow, if we all could have just a sliver of that.. but I read your words and I know the underlying details must be absolutely AMAZING because God is. He is truth and He is LIFE. Thank you for sharing your words through your books and this blog. Rejoice, we are with you!

Hi Lysa! I’ve been thinking about you so much over the past couple of weeks. Honey, I know (almost) exactly what you’ve been going through, and you’re right–it is nothing short of a miracle that you (or I) are here. About 8 years ago, during a nasty bout of diverticulitis I ended up in the hospital for 11 days, resulting in having 18″ of my colon removed. It remains one of the most scary and important times in my life (and, I would say, in the lives of my daughters).

I just want to encourage you that the worst is over. You will, hopefully, begin a steady climb back to complete health now, although it may take some time. Just give yourself the grace to rest and just be. Take this time to seek the Lord and what He has for you next. It may be the most wonderful time of your life!!

Please feel free to get in touch if you need to talk to someone who has been through this. I know that the first month or two post-surgery felt something like PTSD to me and it helped to have people to talk it through with. I’ll be praying for you, friend.

    Dear Lysa,
I am so happy that you are ok. Between your Proverbs 31 Ministry and First Five you and the other ladies have changed my daily study and faith life. I especially could relate to your recent piece about “I’m not good enough” and today’s “There’s a lady in the gym that hates me.” I have let these feelings dominate my life but fortunately I’m getting away from this lack of confidence.
God Bless You Always for making just a difference in the lives of so many of us that read Proverbs 31 and First Five daily.

Lysa, your devotionals, blogs, books and words of encouragement have been very timely in my life and the lives of so many that I have forwarded them on to.
Just recently I too have been going through some major health issues and major family upheaval. Just had surgery on Monday and biopsy’s and Now waiting for the results. Either diagnosis is not great but trusting and have faith in The Almighty Physician.
In the process I too am hesitant to share this crazy journey I have walked this past few years. But I can see the Masters hand leading and guiding with His still small voice.
I pray The Lord will continue to restore and heal your physical body and strengthen you each day for the journey ahead!
