I’m Disappointed In Myself

August 30, 2014

I think I’ve finally figured out the root cause of the chaos that sometimes sweeps into my life and makes the worst of me emerge.

I struggle with decisions. I don’t want to miss out on opportunities, mess up relationships by disappointing people, or misstep right out of God’s will.

And then, I struggle with wondering if my inability to do it all will make my kids wind up on a therapist’s couch one day. How do other women seem to do it all?

And worst of all, I struggle with feeling like I’m going to let God down.

Descriptions ping in my head: I’m tired. I’m distracted. I’m disappointed in myself.

I feel slightly used and more than slightly used up. I’m a little overwhelmed and a lot worn down.

Can you relate? I thought maybe you would.

Last year I finally had to admit I wasn’t doing so well. So I put pen to paper and dared to explore this topic as an author who needs this message most of all.

This time was hard for me. Admission instead of omission.

I had to admit that I needed to reevaluate. I whispered, “God, I really want to do life right. So I give and serve and love and do and sacrifice. I do it all with a happy heart, an open checkbook, a calendar dedicated to being Your girl. I study Your Word. I tuck truth in my heart and as a trembling, brave one, I determine to charge upward and forward each day. I’m going to be fine, right God?”

And yet there was this nagging sense that something was a bit off inside me. Someone would make a request of me that I knew right away was unrealistic. My brain would say no. My schedule would say no. My reality would say no. But my heart would say yes! Then my mouth would betray my intention of saying no, and blurt out, “Yes, of course.”

I dreaded saying yes but felt powerless to say no. I dreaded saying yes not because I don’t love that person. I love them very much. But I dreaded what saying yes would do to the already running-on-empty me.

And I kept on marching as if this is how a Christian woman is supposed to live, as if this is the call on my life, as if this is all there is.

I misused the two most powerful words, yes and no.

Every assignment felt like my assignment.

And this kind of thinking almost made me crumble and quit ministry.

Friends, can I gently but honestly say it’s time to stop the chaos?

The acid of over-activity eats holes in our souls. From those holes leaks the cry of the calling that never quite happened. We said yes to so much that we missed what I call our Best Yes assignments — simply because we didn’t heed the warning of the whispers within us begging to reassess and breathe.

acidofoveractivity

Are you wanting something more for your life than an endless to-do list and the feeling that you’re never quite keeping up?

We must not confuse the command to love with the disease to please. And it’s not just because of the vicious cycles of people pleasing, although that’s part of it. I miss Best Yes opportunities sometimes because I simply don’t know they’re part of the equation.

I get all twisted up in making the decision to check either the Yes or No box, not realizing there is a third box that reads Best Yes.

I want to introduce you to a more realistic and fulfilling way to live in my new book, The Best Yes: Making Wise Decisions in the Midst of Endless Demands. Click here to purchase your copy.

Today I’m giving away a Kindle, loaded with the eBook version of The Best Yes!

For me this is actually too late. We have desperate financial problems and because I tried to do anything I can to make a contribution to the budget, but still saying yes to the other requests I am totally burned out and have been instructed to take 3 months of total rest.
So please! All you out there take Lysa’s advice, get the book, do the Bible study before you find yourself in this situation.

This is a time of rest, recuperation and encouragement for me – during 12 weeks of recuperation from two back-to-back knee replacements. But that is not all. I believe The Lord is calling me to afresh start – a time of reassessment of His good and gracious priorities in my life – rather than Kathy’s. This book is a “must have” for me. So as soon as I’m up and about, I will be tracking it down. You have written a very brave book from what I’ve read here and I’m anxious to see what yes the Lord’s priorities are for me rather than what I perceive as good priorities without listening for His voice.

With 4 kids and a husband that travels M-F, I know I need to learn how to pick out the best yes ‘ s and not over extend myself. My kids need my A games and I would like to be able to give them my best. I need to protect that very delicate balance of doing my best vs. Doing it all. I have come to learn that I can’t do it all but still struggle with the after math of feelings of letting someone or myself down. I need to learn how to embrace the balance and stop tipping the over schedule direction.

I so need the “Best Yes” in my life. I am too overwhelmed by saying yes to to many things and wished I had said no while I was saying yes as I knew I didn’t really have the time to do what I said yes to. Something else would have to go on the backburner to tackle the new yes.

I am in need of the Best Yes so bad. I am so bad about saying yes to everything and then wishing I had said no. When I do this I put aside what is really important in my life. That’s when I begin to doubt my relationship with God and feel like I am in a mess.

Lysa, thankK you for being willing to admit the things that many of us can’t. You’re real and you give us the strength to be, too. I have a servants heart, and sing with my church’s praise band, but I often worry that the things I do are not ultimately to bring people closer to God, but for myself instead. I love to sing… I love to help people… it makes me feel good to do so… but deep inside of me I worry that it makes me feel good for the wrong reasons. I know that God is using me to build his kingdom and He has everything under control.

Lysa, I’ve spent my entire life living to check things off my lists. The lists made me feel secure and as though I was worthy of ‘something’ since I could point to my list all checked off. I signed up! I can so relate to the information I am seeing about this book. Not many months ago I felt so overwhelmed and frazzled and tired because I loved everything our family was involved in and just couldn’t and didn’t want to say no. Then I found out I have leukemia and everything changed. At first everyone says “just fight real hard it’ll be a tough fight but you can do it” and I was crushed because I was already so worn out I couldn’t imagine picking up another “thing” to do!! I’ve learned a lot about the “best yes” and cannot wait to do this study. And I must encourage you that God is so good and He is fighting this fight as I rest in Him! I am worn down, the only thing I would have differently is have more children. The schedules of games, taxi-ing and wondering where that stray kid is at is all worth it. I can so relate to this struggle of yes and no. In the midst of church and life struggles it’s always, “My wife can do that” and I’m like, “you volunteered my to do what? Don’t you think you should have asked me first.” Add one more yes to the already full mix, mind you that I’ve already added enough of my own yeses. Wonder Woman, I am not. I’m a mom of young adult children just struggling to know just what God’s best yes for me might be. I so need this study, sign me up!

I am so excited about your new book and bible study! I absolutely feel God has used the last few months to show me where my best yes is! My heart was centered on my home but my priorities were scattered between ministries and the needs of others. It took an auto immune disease to bring all of this to a stop. I am thankfully taking time to slow down and really “see” my precious preschoolers and husband. We read. We laugh. We give bubble baths. And capture moments. Not perfect pictures. We take short trips to the park. And I fall asleep too early per a growing to do list, but often cuddling them and knowing this…these days, are right where God wants my focus. Once again I am ever thankful for P31’s Online Bible Study which makes it possible for me to have a bible study with Jesus Girls even if I can’t get out of my pjs! Much love from Colorado!

WOW!! Homeschooling. Running a ranch in the desert. Parenting young adults. On the Board of a state homeschool organization. YES! YES! YES! I say it too much, too, and I have been praying that GOD would help me “close” my mouth and let others step up or just leave the task undone……and that would be OK, if it meant I had time to ENJOY the things I have said yes to. So, your Bible Study could not be more timely for me right now. THANK YOU for saying no to the other good things that have come your way in order to say “yes” to getting this study ready. You did it for me, and I am thankful that GOD is using you in my life this way!! Blessings!

I am so excited for this study. I think it was so brave of you to write this book because it was an admission as you said in the devotion. I lead a moms fellowship and I have observed so many times that the studies God leads me to always end up being things that I desperately need to work on myself. I know God is going to help us grow through this study together. Thanks and God be with us all as we begin to learn more about how to say yes to Him and his plan.

I sit here in tears exhausted, discouraged and disappointed yet again, once more, for the decisions I seem to continually make that derail me from God’s perfect plan for my life. I feel helpless in the tug of war on my heart for the many tasks others seem to have for me..family, work, friends, church..and I’m lost in the tide of unmet needs..both theirs and mine. Thank you for this study. I am signed up and hopeful this will be a beacon and new journey to guide me out of a lifelong despair of pleasing others instead of my Almighty Father and find a new joy and purpose for my life.

Thanks for the opportunity. I am getting better at saying NO. I struggle with bipolar disease, that is worsening despite medications. I have learned that I don’t have to do it all for God to still love me. I knew that intellectually but now I know it in my heart. God’s grace is sufficient. I HAVE to say NO to prevent me from sliding down again. When I am feeling well, I so want to say Yes to everything but I know that shortly I will be spinning down, so ENOUGH is my word of the year.

Sitting here today feeling all worn out, barely able to move, completely exhausted. This was my first week as adjunct faculty at a local college-no big deal I thought-18 hours is not much time to work in a field I love every week is it? I mistakenly thought I can still work f/t for my husband, right? and I can still make a few home visits each month can’t I? What I discovered quickly is that there is not enough of me to meet everyone’s expectations. I have no energy left for me. So what did I place on the back burner? everything that “centers” me such as reading my Bible, prayer time, attending my favorite weekly bible studies-and being around other Godly women.

The internet has put me in touch with some wonderfully, anointed pastors and teachers from whom I have learned much about the amazing God we serve. Blessings to you, renee

I am able to read the daily messages because I have had the opportunity to stay in Iceland for the past six months with open access to internet services and great amenities, but in three weeks time I’ll be moving back to Uganda, and will miss this marvellous fellowship.
What is important, however, is that I make it my daily prayer for a life with Jesus. I am weak but I know that He is strong and therefore, I am more than a conqueror. I may not be able to buy this book, but will reflect on the Sermons I have watched and heard. With the Grace of God, am sure I too will have the Best Yes. As I read more today, I had the same feeling. I was wondering how I could do it at home perhaps with my daughter and her sister-in-law. Then I saw this email. My daughter has 3 children, 16, 9, and 6 and the whole family has lots of activities. Needless to say, she needs to learn to say no or how to pick the best yes! Hi Lysa,
I was just emailing a friend yesterday about how I experience heavy condemnation almost every day, except for when I take that time to get alone with God and ask Him how He sees me. It truly is amazing how God peels back the layers of my heart to get to ‘just me’ and from there is able to direct me to my ‘best yes.’ So much of my heart resonates with your heart, and it seems like the Holy Spirit has linked us up together so that your message comes just at the right time. 🙂 Unglued was perfect as I was getting ready to have my fourth child, and now ‘The Best Yes’ also seems to be in sync with what God wants to deal with in my heart. So thank you for sticking to God’s Word as your guide and taking the time to share what you are learning with the rest of us. I am looking forward to reading the book and starting the study with you on September 22nd!

    Have a good night!

I signed up for your online study, but I also wanted to talk to you about made to crave. I have been studying this for a couple months and it is life changing. I have been doing well until July when my daughter of 5 years old was attacked, sexually. I have lost my way and fear for my daughter every time I go to work. I still have faith and I know this is an attack but this is so hard to work through and when I started to forgive she was attacked again by a different boy and worse. I was wondering if not only this study coming up but others you could recommend for me to get past this. She is fine and she doesn’t understand how bad these acts are. I do and it’s making me feel like the worst mother on the planet. Hope you have some good news, hope to here from you soon.

I have been on a 2 year pause…..it was the best decision I have made for a very long time. I did the years of service, years of open house and open car and open bank account and loved it, served on many committees and then set up the ladies life group ministries in our fellowship, realized I was going from event to event and everything that was a yes felt like a duty and my compassion slowly leaked away my dear husband of 38 years, my now grown children who benefited from my years of flying through the calendar year from one event to another all spoke quiet words of admonishment and kind direction, my health was in serious condition and my personal faith and joy in service had hit a wall. Every yes now when I give one means something or someone hears a no. I think about it now and yes truly pray for His direction and wait for an answer. Life is calmer and sweeter. I didn’t realize that I was waiting to just exhale, til I could and then take a slow lung bursting deep breath. Take you time Lysa, God truly wants the best for you and do does your husband and children. God bless you as you wait.

I’m so thrilled you have written a book on this topic. 8 years ago with kids in middle school and high school I was at my breaking point w the busyness of our lives. I learned in counseling that saying no is a huge leap in my health my sanity my time w family And it was a good word not a bad word. This is going to encourage so many women to find a middle ground and not feel like yes is what they are suppose to do. You are always so awesome in your walk with God. And I thank you for publicly sharing

I’ve always been a people pleaser. It all stemmed from trauma in early childhood. Being too scared to NOT please a parent can damage your soul that resonates well into adulthood. With God’s help, I’m trying to heal and live my life in the way that He would have me to live. I’ve learned that the only one I need to please is God. When I fail, He lifts me up and loves me anyway. I am SO with you! I lived that crazy Yes to everything life for several years-thinking all the ‘doing’ was for God- until it all came crashing down on me physically and I ended up in the hospital for the night due to a rapid heart beat- at 32yrs old. God revealed to me that He wasn’t asking any of those ‘doing more’ things from me- He just wanted Me! It’s been a journey in learning how to slow down and allow room for margin (freedom) when things pop up. It’s a crazy thing how for so many of us it’s actually Hard to slow down- to live in the simplicity of what Gods called us to-vs the chaos of busy-ness our world has come to respect. Busier as you know isn’t better. The one thing that greatly helps me when the guilt of choosing more wisely and slowing down tries to swoop in and Rob me of my Joy- is remembering that Jesus Himself-walking here on earth-stuck with His Father’s plan. He could have run around healing Every Single Person of all their issues and ailments but He did Not! That amazes me truly! Imagine though the human part of Him- at some level He must have experienced the pull from the needs of others deep within Him. However- He fought that pain to fulfill His Father’s ultimate Beautiful plan- for all of us! Remembering that helps. Remembering that as you say- my Best Yes is my most important Yes! God will do so much more with my Best then I could ever imagine! Thank you for writing your book! May your words help others defer from experiencing some of the consequences many of us have- and stay focused on the Main thing- Seeking Jesus First- and trusting His word is true-that when we do so we miss Nothing because ‘all these Things will be added into us’! 🙂 XO-Sommer

I’m not sure who wrote this post just now on Facebook…”Fear can sometimes creep into my heart and steal my focus away from having faith. I’m learning the first step to stop fear is to acknowledge it. Then overpower fear with prayer and God’s Truth.”
I needed to see this at this exact moment!! I’m a single mom & the sole provider of my family (my mother also lives with me) and was told this past Wednesday that my job is being eliminated 10/31/14. Today hasn’t been a good day, worry & fear are creeping in after a good church service with communion yesterday.

I am looking for a devotion that I heard on KLOVE around 8/26. It was about being content with what we have, not competing with others, and being thankful for things we take for granted, like having water when we turn on the faucet at our home. Please let me know where I can find the transcript to that awesome devotion. thanks!

I signed up for the Best Yes study and bought the book and I’m in the process of reading it. I’ve been looking for answers for a long time but never quite get there. I was hoping this book would shed some light on making my Best Yes answers….however, in the midst of all that is happening in my life, I search and search for the correct answer, to know if I’m making the best decision, my ” Best Yes” decision? In reading the book and looking through your website and reading some of the resources you have available, I’m finding that one of the key things I need, is the willingness to fix what is severely broken. My marriage! Not quite sure where any of this is going or how it will even help. I guess I’m just tired of the constant pain that is associated with this marriage! I don’t even know what to pray anymore. I have studied and studied scripture and even explained the very things you have in your “love quiz”. Very good material by the way! However, both parties need to be willing, and I’m not anymore. To be honest I don’t know if I ever was willing. I said yes because of surrounding expectations. I don’t even know why I’m posting this.

I’m in the empty nest stage of life, but still overcommitting myself to too many things! My husband and I are trying to simplify, not complicate!

When I found out this summer exactly what your new book was based on my heart immediately was convicted. Actually, I was convicted before that, this was just my ah-ha moment. Last school year my family’s schedule became severely overwhelmed. I’m an extrovert and I get fueled by being with people. However, even extroverts can only handle so much and the three kids and husband I manage and take care of. In January I blew UP on my husband (I’m a stuffer then wham EXPLODE). It was THE worst blow up I’ve had in our 14 years of marriage. It was so bad that I had to write him an apology letter. Thankfully he’s a forgiving guy. I knew part of the issue was our overwhelmed schedule. My kids are still pretty young and we don’t HAVE to be involved in everything. So, when I saw what the book was going to be about I began praying that God would go ahead and show me how to make wise choices with my family’s time. Thankfully we made some very big decisions by saying NO to some activities. This has given me the freedom to just PLAY and be present in their lives. I know they are growing up so fast and I won’t get much longer to pour in Christ’s foundation to their little hearts. I want my kids to love serving others more than being involved in activities to take up their time. So, thank you for writing this absolutely fabulous book. I’m learning so much and realize that I have to have a BEST YES at all times.

I’m signed up! As a mother of 5, all in sports, and a husband that owns a business plus works 40 hours/week at another job to allow me to stay home, I find myself overwhelmed most of the time. And yet when asked to do something- help organize events, captaining a softball team, cooking dishes for family gatherings, volunteering to host those family gatherings- I am compelled to always say Yes so as to not let anyone down. Like I have any extra time to squeeze more activities in to my (and my kids’) schedule! I cannot wait for some insight on learning to say No once in awhile and not feel guilty about it, as well as recognizing the best Yes’s when they come along! Thanks so much for all you do to help us get through our days with less struggle!

I am a young-at-heart 69 year old grandmother, still running a business and “doing life” at church, at home, with friends and frankly frazzled so much of the time. Not that I don’t love every one of those things, but where’s the balance? My biggest struggle right now is I want to be an integral part of my grandchildren’s lives (in the midst of all the other “to do” things) but struggle with how much time I “should” devote to keeping my little ones & spend time with the bigger ones? My heart is really not in it right now because, well, I’m pulled in so many directions and just want to “do nothing” for awhile. How to find the balance without feeling guilty???

Signed up and ready – I want to live life according to our God and his wonderful word. Sometimes it seems all of our other yes stuff takes us away from our quiet moments and growth within ourselves to get closer to knowing our Savior.
Being overwhelmed with what the world demands of us does not compare with what we will gain when taking time out for God, I need God to guide my every step and looking foward to just learning. 🙂

I’m going to try again. I would love to win a Kindle with your book in it. I signed up for your “The Best Yes” online bible study. I know it’s going to be a good study because everything that was mentioned above sounds like me. I get so disappointed in myself because I choose the wrong thing instead of doing the best. I’ve been doing your study on “Made To Crave” a few times. Everytime I do it I learn something new. I’m also in a “Made To Crave” accountability group. That has really been a blessing. I’m hoping someday to go to one of Proverbs 31 retreat with my daughter. Thank you for all you do for us in the name of Our Lord. Sharon
