Friday Favorites: Fun Decorating Ideas

July 12, 2013

Charlotte has been experiencing a little bit of a rainy season here lately. And by a little, I mean check-the-extended-forecast-and-there’s-a-lightning-bolt-every-day type of season. You might say we’re swimming this summer, but not in any kind of pool.

While the weather patterns are bizarre, I welcome a break from the southern heat. I also welcome the unrushed pace the rainy days bring.

While writing my next book has taken up a chunk of my summer, I am happy to announce….

It’s done!

I turned in all 60,200 words this past Monday.

For the next several days, I just want to use my computer for things that don’t require words : )

So, today’s Friday Favorites post is all about simple but delightful decorating ideas.

Here are some favorites I’ve found:

fridayfaves071213

1) Chevron seems to be the pattern of the season. It’s on clothing. It’s on cell phone cases. And apparently, now it’s on pillows. Which is fine by me – I love the “pop” this pattern brings to a room!

2) Something about Pottery Barn just makes me want to redecorate. Everything. But since that’s a little unrealistic, I’m sticking with this vintage lantern.

3) I may or may not have originally seen this idea as a centerpiece for a wedding shower. Okay. I did. And no, we’re not marrying anyone off. But I just thought this was such a cute idea to brighten up a kitchen area or dining table. It’s simple and cheap to make your own – just fill a mason jar with lemon slices and flowers from your yard.

4) Another DIY decoration – stacking old books to elevate a picture frame, small vase, etc. You can find books like these at your local consignment shop, antique store, or a yard sale!

5) Don’t you wish you could just point to a sign for answers every time your people make you want to come unglued with their endless questions and arguments? This mama does. That’s why the Family Rules poster is so amazing!

And today, Alexander Creative is giving away one of the posters right here on my blog. Leave a comment telling me where you’d hang this in your house as a reminder.

This is such an amazing poster with wonderful messages. How inspiring this would be in any home. In my own home I would place it right in our stairwell/foyer. No matter where you walk in my house you have to pass the stairway/foyer. Would love to be able to glance at this multiple times per day!

I love each one of these ideas especially the one with the books. We have about 10 book cases in our house because both my husband and I love books. With the idea, I would have to read the books first then stack them up. I would love to get classics that have stood up to the test of time like Anne of Green Gables, Wuthering Heights or David Copperfield. These were all wonderful ideas.

I love, love, love the family rules posters/wall hangings. So ok I know this sounds like a really odd place to hang this but I would hang this on the bathroom wall in my kids bathroom. It’s perfect reading material for those private moments that require a little thinking while in the bathroom. TMI??? Sorry.
When I was a teen I visited my cousins frequently and my aunt posted something Erma Bombeck had written about why moms do the things they do even though kids don’t understand their motives right at eye level while sitting on the potty. Well after awhile I had memorized that silly thing and even during a quick trip to the bathroom I would reread it and it has stuck with me to this day. Kids absorb more things like this I think better than than we are yap, yap, yapping about them. So maybe it seems a little crazy but it just may be worth a shot at getting kids to pay attention to it rather than seeing it as just another wall decoration I have hanging up my stairs. Have a great day and congrats in finishing your book!

Love it! Love that it’s black and white, my fave, love the passion behind it, love the style, love it all! I would probably hang in between my kitchen and living room. We tend to end up there a lot while I am preparing meals, etc. I love how some of the biggest words are ‘HAVE FUN’, doing life tasks can sometimes pull away the fun, but I am a firm believer in finding the fun as a family. So this lovely sign would remind me to throw a pinch of flour at my toddler for a cute smile! Thanks for you blog!

I would hang it at the top of the stairs where the girls ( I have 3 teenage girls) would see it every time they went upstairs. At this stage in their life, they come home, go upstairs to their rooms, come down to get food, go back up, come down to get a few items of clothing out of their clean laundry basket which never seems to make it back up the stairs with them, then back upstairs. Then down the stairs to ask my opinion on their outfit then back upstairs, then down to go out, then back upstairs. I know they would see it at least 5-6 times a day! 🙂

I just got married a year ago and had a horrible childhood as I endured so many different forms of abuse. I lived day to day in fear not knowing what was going happen. My dream has always been to create a family with God in the middle as opposed to so much hurt and turmoil. My husband is the total opposite of my dad who loves the lord and loves me with all his heart. Yesterday we found out that we are having our first child and all I could think about was how much love this baby will experience in its life. Through the change of my life and all the people God has put in it to show me how love was supposed to be I know that he/she will have more love than anyone I knoe. Therefore, I will put this poster in my baby’s room as a reminder that dreams do come true!

Thank you for being who you are and ministering to us women & moms. I definitely appreciate DAILY all Prov 31 does through the devos.

This poster is a god-send! I need this poster because, although my three kids are wonderful according to every other adult in the vicinity – and I’ll admit they are a pretty great too, they drive me nuts (and to blow my top) with their constant arguing, etc. In fact, I can hear my husband right now asking them to cut it out while I type this. We could definitely use this poster so I don’t have to say a word some days where I’m afraid if I open my mouth, the “alien” will come out!

Love that poster! I would hang it in our foyer over the table, where everyone who walks in can see it. The foyer is the central part of our new house – we just moved after living over 20 years in a different state. We need these reminders – daily! And by the way, you and I have the same taste in many areas, including decorating. I am SO doing the jar with the lemon slices and flowers, I have a similar lantern, love the chevron pattern . . . and Target is my STORE! I told my husband that if there wasn’t a Target store within a 5 mile radius from where we were moving, I was pretty sure Jesus didn’t want us to move there. 🙂

I would hang this in my dining room between all of our collage of pictures of family and friends. This is where my husband, 4 children, and multiple “adopted” children sit on a daily basis. We eat our meals here, we pray here, talk here and spend all our time. This wall is directly across from where I sit and I need these reminders multiple times during the day and evening. Anxiety and past issues have been creeping on me lately. As we all know, our children don’t take turns when issues need to be dealt with, and then add the husband to the mix and uffta…I’m not just on a one day at a time plan, I am on a one minute at a time plan. Thanks for all you do, your emails lately have been hitting home and I look forward to them!

I believe it would also be a witness to my husband who currently isn’t saved and who doesn’t know Jesus Christ as his personal savior. I pray everyday for God to give me strength so I can be a light to him and win him over without saying a word.

My husband and I are empty nesters. And while we could certainly use these reminders, I currently believe the most appropirate wall for the sign would be my office.
We are in the process of implmenting a HUGE software application. This involves working as individuals and teams to determine needs and outcomes. Of course, each department and division has different needs and there is a short time frame in which to meet them. While we are all working toward a common goal of implmenting a successful financial package that would accomodate thousands of employees, things get stressful to say the least. The sign would remind of us of the truly important things not only during this time, but every day….”Love Jesus…..Be considerate, respectful and grateful” and we all need to take time to be “silly and dance.” Thank you so much for sharing this with me.

Also for my extended family of all my kids’ friends that tell me “Mama, this is the house that we all feel most comfortable hanging out in” It makes my heart sing. Therefore, I would hang the poster in the kitchen. I have the perfect wall for it which is also right next to the door so everyone that entered or exited would see it. The rules epitomize what they teach their children and I think it would be wonderful to have a visual reference in a decorative piece. The 7 year old would read each of them and point out the ones her 3 year old brother violated. Love it and your ministry. I would let my daughter-in-law decide where to hang it. Love the poster!!! I’m not a good decision maker so I’ve decided on a few places that the poster would work wonderfully! My entry way so that my family could read it as they leave for the day ; it would b an encouragement to all if us as we face our days. And as we come in from a long day the poster would make us smile b/c we choose to follow an amazing God. My second choice would b the main bathroom as my girls get ready for school to encourage them to live for Jesus! And my final option would b in my dining room front and center on the wall so we could all see the poster each and everyday as we sit at the table. The poster would not only encourage but also spark conversations about Jesus and our attitudes and behavior.
Thank you for the encouragement !

This has been our family’s most difficult week-ever. While I am grateful for all my children, truly, and know that others go through much worse circumstances, our hearts are broken, and little minds are confused. My husband and I had to ask our eldest child to move out of our home and she did so last Sunday. I know God has carried us through this, along with so many others who are praying for us, but we really need a restart with a strong return to a Godly foundation. As my husband and I harness our strength and heal our hearts we simultaneously will be pulling the other kids to a place of healing and wholeness. I would love for each of my family members to be able to glance and glance at the poster hanging in our pottery barn- inspired office, craft and music room so often that eventually the words on the poster are ingrained into our hearts and pour out from us in acts of grace and love for His purposes. A little heavy, perhaps, but that’s where my heart is today.

Where I would hang this great family rules poster kind of depends on how big it is. If it’s not huge I would hang it in the main bathroom. I know, kind of an odd place, but we had a little sayings poster in our bathroom growing up and the saying has always stuck with me because I read it so many times.lol. If it’s larger then I would hang it above our piano/music area. I have a few inspirational pieces hanging there already, but it’s still missing something great. I would hang it in the living room by the craft/play corner. Although single & in my 30s, I’m licensing to become a foster parent because my heart beats (and aches) for these kids. I’m terrified but also excited. It’s strange to have a tug on your heart to do something that doesn’t make sense but you believe is coming from the Lord. I’ve never been a parent and I have tons of questions about how this is going to work out. But right now, I’m just telling God yes and trusting Him to guide my steps. I was introduced to your writing recently when a girl in the small group I lead, asked if we could go through your Unglued study. We used your DVDs and talked through the study. What a blessing you are! Thank you for using your gift of writing to encourage women in their faith and to point them to Christ. I look forward to reading more from you. Grace and peace to you.

I would hang it in our family room…It’s where we spend the most time together as a family and also reinforces what being a family is all about!

I would hang it in my kitchen. We spend lots of hours there and EVERYONE would see it – including my unsaved family and friends. It would be another reminder to be Christlike.

Hi! Wow there are a lot of entries!! I love getting your daily inspiration on fb. I really appreciate your encouragement. I would love this poster hung in our kitchen. It’s right where we can see it from the living room and coming in from the hallway as well. It has a great POP and it’s something we truly need in our home, especially lately! My heart needs a refresh sometimes from the attitudes that explode and I think that would definitely do the trick! Thanking God for using you to bring the words to us even if we don’t win it. If we don’t win it I may need to pick it up somewhere. 🙂
    Thanks for the opportunity!
    Hugs!!

We would love to hang this cool poster in our dining room/kitchen….since that is where we are all often together at once, talking about our day over a meal (not every day necessarily, but we do try to make it a priority goal in our family!). This is the perfect place to talk about the things listed & how our family can work together to make it happen! 😉

I would give his to my 4 grandchildren ranging in age from 10 years to 23 months and another on the way due to arrive in January. I would hang it in their playroom where they are all required to play together each day. Their parents are teaching these exact fundamentals which are bibically founded and make Jesus smile when they treat others in this way. My daughter in law home schools and this could serve as part of starting each day with their prayer. Love it.

We just moved into a new home after being in the same home for 30 years. Our 3 children are grown. We are raising my 16 year old niece and 9 year old nephew. The joys and blessings far outweigh the struggles and challenges that brought about their inclusion into our immediate family. We would hang the “Family Rules” poster inside our entryway to our home…where it would be seen by everyone who entered as well as from our well used living room!

LOVE this poster, and it would fit perfectly in the front hallway where we come and go, and also where the staircase comes down from our upstairs bedrooms. Perfectly in eye view for for all of us to see as we come down to start a new day that our Heavenly Father gives us.

What a great blessing this reminder would be in my home! I would hang it on the wall between my dining and family rooms. I like the idea of having it available for my seven and four year old, as well as my husband and I, to read. I think I’ll have to get one for my preschool classroom too! A nice support for my students and their parents : )

I would hang the Family Rules in my dining room across from the signs that tells us to “give thanks with a grateful heart”/ “there is always something to be thankful for”. We seem to spend a lot of time as a family around the table. Not just at meals times either.

I’d hang this on the wall, in our make-shift school-room/living room/dining room. We want it “written on our doorways” – letting everyone know that first and foremost, we LOVE JESUS. My two (soon to be three!) little ones are learning to read; it would be the centerpiece for our morning lessons. The simplicity of the colors & design drives home the simplicity of JESUS’ salvation. Love it!!
