Never Doubt The Power Of A Simple Note

April 26, 2013

(I covered so many of my favorites in the webcast this week so I didn’t do a Friday Favorites post. But never fear, next week’s Friday Favorites is one of the most fun yet!)

Legacy. It’s a beautiful word. Part old-fashioned grace mixed with a stirring desire to have this word be true of the marks I leave with my life.

A life that hasn’t always been pretty. There was a season of my life that was very dark. When my baby sister died very tragically and unexpectedly, my entire world flipped upside down.

What I knew to be true suddenly became questionable.

Is God good? If so, why this? And if I never know why, how can I ever trust God again?

Hard questions. Honest questions. Questions that haunted me.

Until.

One day I got a note from a friend. A girl I not-so-affectionately called my “Bible friend.” She honestly got on my nerves with all her Bible verse quoting. I wasn’t on good terms with God at that point in my life. I didn’t want to believe God even existed. And I certainly wasn’t reading the Bible.

I made all of this very known to my Bible friend. But in her gentle, sweet, kind way… she kept slipping me notes of truth with gently woven verses tucked within.

And one day, one verse cracked the dam of my soul. Truth slipped in and split my hardhearted views of life open just enough for God to make Himself known to me.

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Personally. Intimately. Relentlessly.

I held that simple note with one Bible verse scribbled on the front as the tears of honest need streamed down my cheeks. My stiff knees bent. And a whispered “yes God” changed the course of my life.

I will never doubt the power of a simple note again.

And I will never doubt the power of one woman reaching into the life of another woman with some whisper of love.

She reached me. She helped change me.

So, I want to reach into her life now and thank her. But how?

Here’s a beautiful way… a “Legacy card” from Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I love doing life with you, my blog friends. I treasure you and count you as one of my greatest blessings. So, as I remember to thank my special friend who sent me that life-changing note so long ago… I want to pause… to also thank you.

Thank you for taking time to visit here at my little blog home. Thank you for taking time to slip comment notes under my door.

Your words of sweet encouragement spur me on in so many ways each day. You have left a beautiful mark on my life.

I just wanted to make sure you knew.

I just finished reading Christine Caine’s book, Undaunted, and landed at A21 ministries website, where she helps rescue women from the slavery of the sex trade. I felt this overwhelming -what can I do in such a dark world when I’m unemployed and broke? She has a list of 21 things a person can do, and the first one is to write a note to a young woman who has been rescued. I went to bed thinking I could actually afford a stamp. Then I opened up your post today to be encouraged about the power of a simple note. WOW!!! I know this isn’t what you’ve intended for this post, but God has certainly used it to encourage me. THANK YOU!!!!

Simple notes…yes. As part of my children’s handwriting curriculum, each week they write copy a scripture verse in their best handwriting, color the page border and mail it to someone. Some weeks they grow tired of doing this, of looking through our address book or church directory to find someone. I continue to tell them God will have just the right person. I cannot tell you how many times a recipient has come to them or written a note back thanking them for their note in the mail, of how perfect the timing was and how much it meant to them. A simple note….even from a child.

Never doubt a simple JUDGEMENT OR CENSORSHIP by a supposed “GOD HEAD” especially when her NAME IS LYSA TERKEURST AND SHE FIGHTS WITH HER EGO ABOUT MAKING A PUBLIC APOLOGY FOR MAKING AN ERROR IN JUDGEMENT FOR CENSORING FREEDOM OF SPEECH ON facebO.Ok!!! PRIDE and inflated EGO FOR BEING A “GOD HEAD” IS HOW “THEY” JUSTIFIED CRUCIFYING THE “wise man” YOU CLAIM TO KNO.O.O.O.O.OW!!! WHEN HE SPOKE THE TRUTH AND SHARED WITH ALL PEOPLE THAT CONNECTING WITH YHWH IS EASY AND PERSONAL, IT THREATENED THEIR POWER STRUCTURES AND INCOME STREAMS FOR THE OPPRESSED WOULD NO LONGER NEED THE OPPRESSOR IN ORDER TO HAVE YHWH’s BLESSINGS!!!
A “wise man” once said, “Ask Questions infinitely from our Creator and YOU will receive infinite Answers!!!” O.O
When we get tired or lazy…
God, or what EVER YOU call “it” will wait…
for God, or what EVER YOU call “it” is patient…
and God, or what EVER YOU call “it” doesn’t have to breathe or sleep so we are at a slight disadvantage there! 😉 haha
So Yes, WE have to Always be MIND FULL of questions and then…
      When we PAY ATTENTION…
The answers will come one by one… sometimes when we least expect it, someone will say something and we say, “wow!”
How co.ol! I was just wondering about THAT!
Sometimes we will find an answer in a bo.ok… sometimes on T.V. or on the radio or in a movie!
We can Learn the answers to our questions As long as we are remembering to ASK the QUESTIONS to GOD, or what EVER YOU call “it”!
The way it works is this… go to a place where it is dark in whatever place you are in… and get on your knees and close your eyes and whisper so your ears can hear your own words and say…
Dear God, or what EVER YOU CALL “it” 😀
in ANY LANGUAGE OR RELIGION 😉
      Hiiiiiii! 🙂
I feel kinda scared in the dark and I feel like a lil squeeky mouse! o.o OR Perhaps a BABY BIRD or a SQUIRREL!!! O.O
However I believe that YOU are here! 🙂
      And I believe that YOU can hear me through MY ears! }O.O{
Which are also YOUR Ears because YOU created ME! O.O
Anyway I KNOW I AM SMALL compared to YOU and I TRUST YOU to take care of ME!!!
YOU ALWAYS make sure US SQUEAKY LIL ANIMALS have
      FO.OD and SHELTER…
SO I AM NOT GONNA WORRY about THAT STUFF ANYMORE and I AM GONNA just FOCUS ON ALL the gO.Od “stuff” YOU send MY WAY and CONCENTRATE on SMILing 😀 TODAY!!!
I REALize how AWESOME it is to BE BLESSed by YOU 🙂
EVERY MOMENT of MY LIL TIME on this Planet for all of my SHORT lil EXISTENCE!!! 🙂
Then… say… oh by the waaaaayyyy I have a question… and YOU don’t have to answer it right NOW in MY mind…
(although sometimes GOD or what EVER YOU CALL “it” does do that some times) I AM really curious and now that I have asked the question… I will wait for the answer ANY way YOU, GOD (or whatEVER YOU CALL “it”), wanna bring it to ME!
When YOU hold an image in your mind with YOUR eyes o.o closed for one minute with a complete feeling of JOY that YOU got what YOU WANTED and YOU SEE O.O YOUrself JUMPing UP and DOWN like when YOU were lil and YOU got what YOU wanted for CHRISTmas when YOU were only a cHiLd or ANY Time in YOUr LIFE… YOU were HAPPY!!! 😀
YOU REMEMBER how AWESOME it was to THINK about what YOU wanted and then having the DELICIOUS ANTICIPATION of it builDING UP with 100% CERTAINTY that YOU WOULD HAVE WHAT YOU WANTED…
      Remember… BELIEVING IS SEEING… O.O
YOU do NOT have to FIGHT the “OUTSIDE WORLD” to get what YOU want…
When YOU were lil at CHRISTmas or whatever “holiday” YOU celebrate…
YOU KNEW what YOU WANTED when CHRISTmas or the “holiday” was 30 DAYS OFF…
So YOU got a lil CHOCOLATE DAY COUNTER and Counted BACKWARDS one DAY at a time… and IN YOUr MIND YOU were IMAGINing and SMILING EACH DAY at A TIME!!!
And then it happened… and the PROCESS STILL WORKS!!!
Except you CAN do it with EVERYTHING… NOT JUST CHRISTmas or your respective “holiday”!!! 😉
When the DAY COMES and it happens to YOU…
      When YOU REALize that YOU,
      CREATE with YOUr MIND!!!
then YOU Understand what the “wise man” said when he said, “the kingdom of God is INside YOU”
And When WORLD PEACE IS the DESTINATION,
WORLD PEACE we ALL shall FIND!!!
      It works EXACTLY like THIS:
FIRST with DESIRE for SOMETHING or SOMEONE or SOMEWHERE… IN OUR IMAGINation… we EITHER
      CREATE with a SMILE… 😀
      Or a FROWN… 🙁
What EVER YOU THINK in YOUr MIND and then YOU SPEAK the WORDs and then YOU FEEL IN YOUr BODY for LONG ENOUGH…
Whether it be a minute for SMALL things or PERHAPS YEARS of
      “gO.Od” THINKing for BIG “things”…
      THAT Becomes YOUr REALity!!!
So when YOU THINK gO.Od… 😀 YOU get MORE gO.Od… 😀
When YOU THINK BAD or MAD :\ YOU get MORE BAD or MAD :\
Now there are meditation techniques that include fasting and sensory deprivations which is why we do the whole Lint or Lent “thing” depending upon YOUr “religion”, that enhance our connection capabilites with GOD, or whatEVER YOU call “it”, even MORE when we need extra ENERGY for CREATING big, BIG changes in our lives… and sometimes when what YOU ask for is BIG…
GOD, or what EVER YOU CALL “it”, WILL WEIGH YOUr LEVEL of COMMITMENT to CONNECTING with HIM with YOUr CONSTANT CONSCIOUS THOUGHTS…
BEFORE HE GRANTS YOU YOUr REQUEST.
So be CARE FULL of what YOU ask for with YOUr THOUGHTS…
      gO.Od or BAD
Because YOU WILL get whatever YOU THINK ABOUT…
When YOU are as COMMITTED to the “BIG KAHUNA” or what EVER YOU call “it”, as the “BIG KAHUNA” or what EVER YOU call “it” IS COMMITTED to YOU…YOU WILL PAY ATTENTION! 😉
      When YOU worry :/ :\
then YOU are saying to GOD, or what EVER YOU CALL “it”… 0.0
please send me MORE to WORRY about!!! 🙁
      When YOU are HAPPY… 😀
then YOU are saying to GOD, or what EVER YOU CALL “it” o.o O.O
THANK YOU GOD, or what EVER YOU CALL “it”!!! 🙂 🙂
Yes, Please Send me MORE to be HAPPY about!!!
      As long as YOU…
pray to what EVER YOU CALL “it” in ANY LANGUAGE of ANY RELIGION, EVERY DAY…
      once when YOU wake UP…
and once before YOU go to sleep…
then YOU WILL ALWAYS be HAPPY! : D
Because whatEVER YOU CALL “it” in ANY LANGUAGE or RELIGION
is ALWAYS WATCHING YOU to See o.o
if YOU remember to say “hello” to whatEVER YOU CALL “it” EVERY DAY…
      when YOU pray! 🙂
      😉 hehe

    Dear Lysa-
Thank you so much for sharing what God lays on your heart. It’s always ‘just what I need to hear’. I tell my ‘sisters’ that you truly pour into my soul. The last few years have been rocky to say the least… Unexpected divorce after 17 years of a semi abiusive marriage, lies, betrayal, financial, job stress rocked the lives of my beautiful children and me… As I struggled to put our life back together I turned to God as my source of help, but realized it was only on the surface… I didn’t truly let God deal with my heart. I realized this last night as I was looking through the kids baby books and found notes professing my ex- husband’s love for me. This week he told my teenagers that he never loved me… I’ve heard it before, but this time his words hurt them… I realized my heart had been numb… It’s a defense tactic I’ve used over and over… Your words this morning blessed me… I’m trying to forgive… Not for his sake, but mine and the kids… Thank you

Your message spoke to me clearly today. The paragraph that you wrote before you stated the bible verse Jeremaiah 29:11 had me in tears. I just knew the verse you were talking about. About 6 weeks ago, when my 15 year old was going through baseball tryouts, I would write him a bible verse nightly before bed with a note to him. His favorite verse was Jeremaiah 29:11. (but he lost the note and neither one of could remember the verse!) He saved all the cards and would read them over and over. He however misplaced his this verse, and was so bummed he could not find it. I just could not remember it and prayed for the verse to be placed on my heart so that I would find it for my son. Well, last night after a rough night in the batting box, striking out. He was very down, and I said do I need to start writing you some notes and bible verses again. And he said yes. Well, I still could not pull from my heart Jeremaiah. But God spoke to me in a diferent direction and I found two beautiful verses which he loved. This morning I woke up read your devotional and see Jeremaiah 29:11, I yelled for my son and just said here it is!! He just smiled and said yep, that is the one. So….long story long……before tryouts I was worried about how he even felt about God. I decided when tryouts started I would just write him a bible verse to wish him luck….well 10 days into tryouts he was still asking for them every night. Who would think baseball would bring my child and myself closer to the ONE we owe it all too!! Thanks for listening! I am a rambling mom today with many directions to go, but just had to share! Thank you for all your inspiration, and bless you for sharing even when it hurts!!

I am amazed when someone tells me a note I sent came at the right time. You see, I usually procrastinate when the Lord nudges me about sending a card. After awhile, He gets to bugging me about it so much that I get it done, and then wonder why I put it off so long.
I think He must want us to have that personal touch that a note brings. It makes everyone’s day, including the sender!

I’m a “carder”. I love to send cards to people. I send them from our little country church or from me personally. I believe everyone ones a special “hug” or thought when they are feeling down and out. I don’t expect anything in return, just that fact that I put sunshine in someones day. Sometimes God will put someone on my heart and he won’t leave me alone until I do something to them(a card, flowers or call).

I have read your book “Made to Crave” twice – right after I finished the first time, I read it again hoping that it would all just “sink in”. I will likely start reading it again as I related to so much of what you said. Without going into details – I would greatly appreciate prayers. I moved just over a year ago and it’s been a hard move. I wish I had a “fitness friend” here but even as I type this, I realize that God can do anything and I’m going to pray for Him to be my “fitness friend”…. I have no idea how he will answer that one but I know that He can do anything far better than I could ever ask for or imagine. Thank you for your ministry.

      Birds and Squirrels

      Two birds and a squirrel

      Feed on the lawn.

They each have their own spaces

And seem to appreciate a certain

      Distance between them.

      No concern of a problem.

    Hey Lysa,
A poem I read a few years back has been on my heart this week and this AM as I thought about your post it came back to mind. Made me think of your Bible friend and encouraged me to be a Bible friend as well! Thought I’d share it with you –

    “My Friend”
My friend, I stand in judgment now,
And feel that you’re to blame somehow.
On Earth I walked with you day by day,
And never did you show me the way.

You knew the Lord in truth and glory,
But never did you tell the story.
    My knowledge then was very dim;
You could have led me safe to Him.

Though we lived together here on Earth,
You never told me of the second birth.
And now I stand this day condemned,
Because you failed to mention Him.

    You taught me so many things, that’s true;
I called you “friend” and trusted you.
But I learn now that it’s too late,
And you could have kept me from this fate.

We walked by day and talked by night,
And yet you showed me not the light.
You let me live, and love, and die,
You knew I’d never live on high.

Yes, I called you “friend” in life,
And trusted you through joy and strife.
And, yet, on coming to this dreadful end,
I cannot, now, call you “my friend.”

Just this morning I was thinking maybe I should get a blank card for her for Mothers day & write what is on my heart. We can still go to lunch we just wouldn’t be blubbering in a restaurant!

Lysa, I read the book Made to Crave for young women. It helped me so much. It seemed like almost every single thing that was written applied to my life in some way. I really needed that. I have been struggling with thinking thoughts like “I’m not beautiful. I don’t get how anybody could ever like me. I’m fat. I’m ugly.” and you and God have helped me so much as I read your book. My dad left my family when I was 3 and went to Florida. I’m 13. It broke my heart and I blamed God for a while. It really made me mad. Your book has helped me sooooo much!!! And I don’t think there is any word that could express how thankful I am that my aunt gave me your book. Thank you!!!

I have been praying, earnestly, that God would send a Godly man, the one He would have me to marry, into my life. I have been so discouraged recently as many of my friends have already gotten married and are expecting children. I long to have that strong Christian home of my own. I know God is able, and I know I have to trust His timing. I will be praying to the LORD to help me work through this as it is definitely not a healthy way to deal with situations. Thank you Lysa for your wonderful teachings and thank you to all of the wonderful ladies at Proverbs 31 Ministries.
