The Most Important Lesson

March 4, 2013

Early in my motherhood adventure I realized I could solve my kid’s problems for them. Not every problem. But for the most part when they had an issue I could step in and be the solution.

Or….

I could mentor and equip my kids to solve their issues; which is much more time consuming, brain draining, and sometimes quite frustrating.

But for me, the most important lesson I want to teach my kids is how to think.

It’s that whole “give a man a fish” thing-

Give him a fish and he’ll eat for a day… or teach him to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime.

I don’t want to train my kids to only turn to me for solutions. I want to help them think in Biblically and emotionally healthy ways, so they can learn the fine art of becoming a solution finder. I want to help them learn to process life choices in grounded, mature ways.

If I only tell my kids what they can and can’t do, I’m establishing rules for them to follow. This is a part of parenting for sure- but it can’t be the whole part.

If I teach them how to think, I’m establishing healthy processing patterns that will serve them when they’re no longer under my immediate watch.

For example, I don’t want my kids to text and drive. I’ve taught them this rule. But to help them learn to process the dangers of driving while distracted, I decided to have a family discussion.

Last week, I asked each of the kids to come to a scheduled family dinner equipped to present a brief report on the dangers of texting and driving. And just as a little incentive, each person that brought their report would get their name put in a hat for a cash prize drawing.

(I’m all about incentives. And it doesn’t take much to motivate cash-poor teens.)

As the kids presented their reports, I saw the light bulbs coming on in their thinking processes. They weren’t just learning a rule; they were discovering how to think about this dangerous habit. They were passionate about it. And the best part? They all owned the solution of committing to not text and drive.

They owned it. Not because I preached a rule at them. But rather, because I helped them learn how to think through this danger for themselves.

The Bible instructs us to teach our kids the truths of God by talking and processing with them all throughout the day. Obviously, texting and driving isn’t a Biblical truth but how powerful it is to apply a Biblical mindset to every issue we face.

So be it a Scriptural truth, or processing life stuff in general, I think the secret is tucked within the beautiful words of Deuteronomy 11:18-21 (NIV):

“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many…”

And speaking of my kids, I’m excited to announce the release of my newest book, What Happens When Young Women Say Yes to God, co-written with my daughter, Hope. Today, I’m giving away 3 copies! To be entered to win, leave a comment below telling me who you would give this book to and why.

Thank you for being such an inspiration Lysa!! I’m a mother of two sons, and I gained a daughter when I married my husband almost 2 years ago. She will be 12 years old the 13th of this month, and I think your new book would be a wonderful book for her. I feel as a 12 year old, almost teenager, my step-daughter would benefit tremendously from yours and your daughters inspiring words. She is a wonderful, loving little girl and keeping Godly inspiration in her life as she grows will only make her an even more wonderful young lady.

I would give this book to my 20 year old daughter. She’s a jr. in college, majoring in youth ministry and currently working with Wyld Life – the jr. high version of Young Life. Besides trying to teach and guide early teen agers, she’s still going through the college age years of development and has struggles of her own. At this age, she doesn’t usually seek my advice and when she does, if it’s not what she wants to hear, she tunes it out. She’s “doing” all the right things for school and for others, but sometimes I think she forgets to plug herself into God in a personal way. I think the book could speak to her as she speaks to her jr. highers, but it could also speak into her life.

I would give this to my almost 14 year old daughter. She has been drawing closer to God since she was molested in 2011 by a friend’s father. She has talked about this in front of groups at church, she is reaching out to other teens on Facebook that post they are having issues with life and self worth, she has attended a Dare 2 Share conference 2 in Columbus, Ohio, and we are currently trying to plan a trip to go to Africa to stay with the missionaries our church supports (though we may have to wait until next year because of the cost of the trip to raise enought money). She already knows that she wants to go into the medical field – pedatrics, but she wants to volunteer for everything she is able to do in helping children right now. She voluteered as a cheer instructor for our church’s Upward basketball program, and voluteers just about every Sunday in helping with our church’s childrens ministries. She has a heart for God, but has faced many challenges with the kids and some adults at her school after finding out she was mollested. She has been bullied, but takes up and defends others when she sees they are being bullied. Because of all of the stress she has faced, she has chronic stomach problems that doctors dont seem to be able to help with. This book would be another encouragement for her to keep fighting all she has and is going through. (sorry so long!)

She has begun choosing better friends and setting higher standards for herself instead of just conforming to the friends she is around. I am really proud of her and want her to see how saying Yes to God can change her life forever.

I am often very thankful that my parents chose to raise me to think for myself. Although it was sometimes hard and I simply wanted them to decide things for me, their choices training me when I was young have shaped me into who I am today.

I would love a copy of this book to read for myself and then pass on to the teenage girls in my life.

I would give this book to my former daughter-in-law. While she is no longer part of my family (and we are still recovering from the damage) I really want her to discover her true worth. She has struggled with drug addiction, abuse and abandonment. She cannot accept her real value and pushes the good away. She tells me she has found God but I fear for her. I can’t reach her anymore…except in prayer but I would get this to her. I have read so much of your writing and heard you speak. I want Brandy to have that experience.

I would give your book to my oldest daughter who will be 14 in 2 weeks and is graduating from 8th grade and headed to high school. High School terrifies me!!! I do however, love my relationship with my daughter and her friends. They/She wants to be around me. They/She want to tell me things that happen at school, between friends, who likes who etc. It makes me very sad when I hear parents speak of their teenage parents and say how their children are embarrassed for them to be around. I read your book Radically Obedient, Radically Blessed. I have recommended it to many. My daughter and I love reading books together and would love to read you new book!!!

I would share this book first with my mother as she and I are the closest women to my 4 year old little girl. Being a mom of a little lady can be so incredibly scary these days for so many reasons. I am on my own personal journey to strengthen my relationship with the Lord and I want to take the two most important women and little women on my journey as well as encouraging their own. But I also just began a new job in my daughters Catholic School where I am surrounded by girls in preschool through the 12th grade that I know would tremendously benefit from your book. Your book fits in perfectly with a work project that I would like to pursue. The idea is centered around bringing young girls together on a weekly basis and involving them in a Christ centered leadership group. They would learn lessons, equip themselves with the tools needed to not only survive but thrive as s child of God and giving them the confidence and leadership necessary to be a witness to others. I am so excited about your book…I cannot wait to see you in Syracuse on March 16th and again at She Speaks in July. You are my writing inspiration and I pray that God will bless my heart and my fingers with His words to share.

They are teenage girls who have struggled with all of the horrible things there father has done to them and said to them. Although they know the Lord, this would be a great way for them to see what amazing things happen when you let him in your life/heart completely. All of those bad memories and words can be erased and replaced with new beautiful memories and words by a God that loves us unconditionally.

I can relate, as I was just as sensitive as a child, and even today have to fight to take constructive criticism. Despite the divorce of her parents and then another divorce between her Mom and Stepdad just recently, she continues to thrive in school, in church and in life. She doesn’t care what anyone else thinks about her feelings for Jesus…she is bold in her faith…even at her public school. She has a serious gift that I wish I had at 37! Here is a Facebok post that she wrote this morning…(I deleted her last name for privacy)

I don’t know how some people live their lives without jesus in it. I know i would be completely on the wrong path and lost if i didn’t know jesus. Who do you pray too? Where do you think your soul will go when you die? I can’t stress how important it is to me to know that i’m safe, i’m forgiven, and i will always be loved all because of what jesus christ did for ME and everybody else in this world. Truly amazing. ❤

Enjoyed the post, Lysa. As for the book, and I’d love a copy, I’d give it to my young adult daughter, Meghan. As a young teen, she gave her life to the Lord. During those years, she faced tremendous challenge and heartache, things which test even the stalwart of faith. In her last year of college, she openly confessed her struggle with whether she’d really been saved, and how she could see God’s patient, loving heart continuing to woo her, and draw her; reveal Himself to her and confirm His word in her. She immediately asked to be baptised, as a public demonstration of her faith, and has been in happy fellowship with believers. In the few years following, she’s had blessings such as God openning doors for a teaching job; she’s also had the heartache of a broken relationship, and the confusion which follows when you’re just so sure the godly young man whom your dating must be God’s answer to your prayers. I long for her to know that not only does her Heavenly Father have plans for her (some fulfilled, many yet to be..) but that He does and will bless her, and provide for her every need, and as He so often does, her deepest hearts desire.

I’m sure whoever you choose will be blessed by the book, though, so thanks!

This was her “comng out” She has struggled with her sexuality and is crying for help. She is so precious! She is distancing herself from her mom, my sister, who deals with major depression. She recently shared with her mom her confusion with her sexuality. This has added to her mom’s depression. My niece is lashing out at her mom. She has chosen to distance herself from her dad. Her parents divorced when she was 7.

I also have a 12 yr olf adopted daughter with huge abandonment and rejection issues who projects all her pain on me. She was sexually molested at a very young age biy birth relatives! She also needs to understand and embrace God’s love for her and nothing is imPOSSILE WITH God.

We recently moved which meant she didn’t get to go to the high school she thought she would attend. She was quite devastated. And to be honest so was I! However, we’ve talked and talked about why God might have moved her here. We’ve discussed the fact that he has a plan for her life and a plan for her high school years. Even though it’s not at the school she wanted. I think your book could make a huge difference in the way she views her classmates and those she comes into contact with every day. Thanks!

What Happens When Young Women Say Yes to God, sounds like a great opportunity to resource my daughter.

I loved your article today about teaching your children to think! I know that it does take a lot of energy, but so worth the process. This new book you have written will go well in teaching our girls to think! I know my daughter would love to read this book because she loves to absorb information! Thank you for the opportunity to get this book. 🙂

My daughter who is currently serving in the US Air Force, military police is expecting her first child (my first grandchild) this June! We are absolutely thrilled as she become pregnant after returning from her deployment to Afghanistan. As a testament to God’s goodness, God deliverd her home safely after she was trapped in an armored car; a door weighing tons closed on her mid-stomach. The safety release lever failed to work and truly by the grace of God and some nearby Afghan soliders- 6 men were able to pry the door open and free her. Doctors said all the gear she was wearing and the strength of these men saved her life- otherwise, she would have been crushed to death. I believe it was God’s merciful hands that pried that door from her and she walked away virtually scratch-free. God is good all the time and now we have a new life that will be beginning soon. My greatest desire is for my baby girl to raise her daughter to be God-fearing and well-equipped. My hope is that my grandchild will be taught strength and reliance in God’s hands throughout all of life!

I would love to share this with my two daughters, especially right now as we have just made it through a family crisis with great faith. I am teaching them many of their Sunday school lessons this year and sharing stories from the bible that relate to their lives and how faith can open doors. This would be so meaningful as we close one chapter and open another.

I would love to give this to my 15 year old daughter, Lauren. I have been asking her the past couple of years if she was ready to be baptized (which our church holds monthly). Each time she said no, not yet. Just recently she told me she is not sure of the whole ‘God’ thing and she has not accepted Jesus as her savior.

I have been struggling myself to try to help find ways to lead her on the right path to help her find her faith. Not force her, but to guide her. She is a great kid, great grades, never causes a problem… she is just a lost sheep.

Thank you for your wonderful blogs and facebook posts. I look forward to them.

I would love to give this book to my 16 year old daughter because she is my hero! She goes to a public high school and she doesn’t have any really close friends. Her “best friend” kind of dumped her for other friends, but my daughter is not bitter or angry and continues to love life and people in spite of how others treat her. She loves babies and the elderly and they love her back. In this world where teens are pressured to fit in, she doesn’t capitulate! She marches to the beat of her own drum, and she loves God!

I would read this book with my 14 year old step-daughter. My husband was a single father when we got married , so I inherited a 10 year old girl! I soon had my biological son after we were married and it has been a challenge being not only a “step-mother” but raising a teenage daughter. She has endured a lot, the biggest being the death of my husbands mother 2 years ago, as she was like her “mom” (her biological mother is not in her life). She is still growing spiritually and it is very difficult in this day and age. She recently got upset with me for “making her do too much at church”. We have moved past that and now she is so excited about our church’s summer camp! Learing about the Lord together has helped our bond grow stronger.

I believe not only would she learn from it but would have the opportunity to share it with so many other young women in the sorority, and most of all the young girls she mentors in the youth group. I know the girls in the sorority are always doing bible studies and maybe this would be a book they could reinforce and discuss the importance of saying yes to God Did I leave my other daughter out, no I know that Alex would share it with her also.

I would give this book to my 20 year old daughter. She has always been one sensitive to the Spirit. As a 4 year old, she wanted to be baptized. Her father felt she was too young and mentored her for a year, and the instant her daddy agreed she was ready! We went to Oregon where she was baptized in the same river and same spot as her daddy had been years before. It was precious. Fast forward to present day, she is in a relationship not honoring God, not happy, but somehow, she has chosen it over all we have taught her to be right and true. It is her first relationship, first love, and she is one stubborn gal. She has lost who she is in this relationship. Much prayer for her to find her way home…

I would love a new picture of being a godly girl. Your book Unglued has been life changing because of the specific details on how to apply scriptures in my day to day parenting. Today was a great blog! I would give the copy of your book to my daughter who is 10 years old and in the 4th grade. She has what I call the “second child syndrome.” My first born, a boy, who is now 16, has been pretty easy when it comes to bringing him up–socially, academically, emotionally, and spiritually. But, my second child, has been a different situation. I do not compare negatively–I’m just aware that it is completely different and she is definitely in need of “owning” the rules so to speak, rather than just being told. I feel that this way may work out SO much better and avoid “the battles” that I chose to pick.

I know this would be a wonderful blessing for them to be able to share with their Mom. At 9 she is experiencing peer pressure, bullying, and so many things that make her question herself, lowers her self esteem, and makes her feel so sad sometimes. I often watch her demeanor change from childlike to having to handle situations that no 9 year old should have too. We are raising her in a Christian home and a book like this could help her and myself learn how to handle various day to day situations the way God would want us to.

I have a 13 year old son so I would have never thought this was where I was supposed to be but the Lord showed me that I was that wounded, young girl many years ago that with the correct guidance, might have turned to the Lord instead of other things to fill up my empty places had I known that He would provide me EVERYTHING I needed! I would be blessed to receive this book as I embark in this new ministry that God has placed me in! Thank you for considering me. Be blessed Lysa!

This would be a great book for her encouragement and helping her girls develope their relationship with God. We talk about thinking in a “God” way outside of church, whether during a stressful day of school, a soccer game, at a friend’s house, etc to hopefully instill the knowledge that he is always with us. My 10 year old says she wants to sing a praise song at her public school talent show, so I think we’re getting there!

Ahhhh….great idea about getting teens to ‘own’ the behavior to not text. Have them do the research…give them a cash incentive (I’m stealing this idea) and let them share in a discussion format.
You are so right on about getting kids to think for themselves! I am a high school teacher and I see this so lacking as young kids try to tackle the world…they lack the ability to think on their own.
You asked who I would give a copy of your new book too…. I would keep it. I would read it and then use it as a tool as I continue to mentor high school girls (and boys) on a daily basis. I meet with 100 students every day! I am frank and honest with them about life and life issues as I teach health. I’m bold about my faith and I’m always looking for ways to keep ‘my tool sharp’ as I speak to them at their level. So yes, I’d keep the book and use whatever specific things God wants me to use in it, to impact the next generation. Incidentally, I wanted you to know that I recently bought your Made to Crave for younger women, book. Thank you for putting in ink some very profound truths that many young women need to hear!

I would give it to my daughter -which seems to be a common theme! She is a freshman in college and she loves to lead Bible studies and prayer events. We have talked about these issues since she was young starting with the Princess and the Kiss, then doing the Girls of Grace studies and before college read the book Kissed the Girls and made them Cry. She is passionate about purity and thinks it is a topic many need to know about but sees that even Christian girls are rarely introduced to this concept.

Have you ever seen that movie where the hunk says, “What’s with all you southern girls that you gotta make all the wrong decisions before you make the right one?” Well that is my sister. Twelve years my junior, she just doesn’t get it when I try to tell her “been there, done that” because when she looks at me now, I appear to have it all together. But when I was in my twenties I was a mess too. Fortunately, I realized that i had to turn it all over to God and make my relationship with Christ personal. She doesn’t get that yet. Maybe your book could convince her…..

I would give the book to my oldest granddaughter, who is now 19 and didn’t have the joy of going to church for most of her childhood. Her parents quit going to church when she was about 7 and she lives too far away for me to take her. Now, her mom has been an active church member for about two years, but my granddaughter doesn’t want to go with her (except on Christmas or when her younger siblings are in a program). I know her lack of interest is the result of a lack of Christian spiritual growth and development. Yet, I have hope because God does not want one person lost.

I would give it to my daughter, Mickala. She is 18 & lives in Tampa, Fl with her dad. I live on the mountain, in the country in Alabama. She moved in with him when she was 12. When I was raising her, after her dad, my (now ex-husband), went to prison, for 9 felony drug charges, I had several different boyfriends. I did not serve the Lord. When he got out, he stayed clean & I allowed her to go live with him. She dropped out of school last yr & went to work at Krystal’s fast food. To help support her dad while he is nursing his habit again & has been for a yr or 2. I just recently found this out. I’m currently waiting on my disability to start, I just got approved this past Friday. I had a bypass & 2 heart valves replaced June 2011. This is boyfriend # 2 that has moved in with her & her dad. Mickala & her boyfriend share a room. She has cheated on both boyfriends. I do not have a vehicle, nor do I have any savings. My parents have been supporting me since April 7th, 2012. Dr bills, medicine, everything. I was saved on or about October 15, 2012, I don’t recall the date. I began attending Big Rock Holiness Congregational Church on November 3, 2012. The Lord sent someone to take me to hear His word. I have fallen in love with Our Savior. I love to call him Abba, for I was told, that’s a term meaning daddy. If you knew me before last October, you wouldn’t know me today. I didn’t believe in the Lord. I’ve even cursed Him & my sins were numerous. But He forgave me. I’ve signed up for a dozen newsletters. I read & study His Word daily. I wake up praising Him & I go to sleep praising Him. I never miss a Church Service. My Facebook, my e-mail account, my twitter page, my pinterest page, its all about Christ Jesus. I am a changed woman, I am a saved woman by God’s Amazing Grace. He has forgiven this unworthy sinner, washed & covered me with His Precious Blood & made me whole. Every time I have a chance to speak to my daughter, I always try to talk to her about God. She doesn’t want to hear it, she’s not even sure she believes in Him. She’s just like her mother used to be. Lord help me, I don’t know what to do or to say, to help her see the light. I pray about it & I’ll never stop praying about it. My grandmother tried to turn me from my wicked ways from the age of 12. I am now 39. I was 39 when I was saved. There’s is nothing back there for me. Jesus is all I need. All I want. I long for Him like I’ve never longed for anything. I even stopped dating. 🙂 I had to travel my path to get where I am. I know she must travel hers. But it doesn’t have to be like my path. She is still young enough to turn around before her life just gets worse. I see Mickala living my life & I know the only thing that can change it is MY GOD. I read your article/blog. I saw your free give away offer. I went to the comments & seen how many there were. My old self said “why waste your time, there’s so many, you don’t stand a chance. And Jesus whispered in my ear, go back & sign up. I will tell you what to say & all you must do is type what I tell you to”. So here I am. My daughter needs this book. God told me so. He wants her to have it. I need her to have it. Her & my son are the people I love the most, after the Lord, of course. He is my shield. My friend. The one & only lover of my soul. Ive already learned my lesson in disobeying Him. Although I know I will falter, I will never turn my back to Him again & He will never falter. Isn’t He is wonderful!!!!! I believe He will stir your heart to read this long story & choose for my daughter to receive your book, just like He stirred mine to write it. May God Bless you in all that you do. Lots of Love, God, Niki & Mickala 🙂

My only daughter will be 20 years old in a little over two weeks. So far she is “saying yes to God” in the big (or obvious) areas. But there are so many areas of our lives that we try to “protect” because we don’t REALLY trust God with our whole self. I’d like her to come to a better understanding of who God is and why He is trustworthy. It seems to be more effective coming from someone other than your parent!

Stephanie did so much for me as a teenager to help me grow in my Christian faith and so the least I can do is give this book to her daughter. Her daughter is a very involved Christian in her youth group and I think this book would help her continue her strong and close personal walk with God. Stephanie helped me and I would love the opportunity to give this book to her daughter so maybe I could be of help to her through the gift of this book.

Today, your message hit home! I think timing is everything and I needed to see and comprehend the message.
I was forced to face my 12 year old daughter is having a very difficult time in middle school. She has had a schedule change leaving her without the friends she made the first part of the year. Her friends she does have are pitting one against the other & my daughter feels like she is in the middle and that she risks losing one or both. Her twin brother doesn’t “understand” her…she makes straight A’s, loves to read and is very gifted academically.
She is having a difficult time “finding herself” and I believe this book could help her (possibly, me, too)!

I know you will have a difficult time deciding who to award your books too… My daughter has had to live with situations beyond her control. Through my past faults and in most recent years because of her father’s new family, she has dealt with isolation and in her senior in high school, has met a boy whom she feels is be-all and end-all to her loneliness. My newly acquired spiritual lifestyle, still in child-stage, doesn’t know how to help guide her in the right direction…God’s direction. If nothing else, help me learn how to help her make good choices.

She’s asking questions about God and sharing more and more. I’m hoping this book will give us something to talk about and open her heart to the love of Jesus. She’s hurting so much! She is struggling with the concept of its easier to be without God, or is it? She is questioning who she is in God and who God wants her to be. I, along with her mother, have been praying for this young lady as she struggles with loving God in her unGodly world of High School. I would love to share this book with her. Years ago I did childcare in my home. In 1991 this very tiny baby 4 weeks old came into my life. She was wild haired and full of life. As she grew she developed her own little personality and was very determined! Fast forward many years and she is still a very large part of my life. She is my movie and beach companion. She is the person I call with big news after sharing it with my family. And the same goes for her calling or visiting me. We have a great bond between us and I love the fact that God used me to bring her to Christ. She is soon graduating from college to be a teacher and her love for people and God are the tools she will use to accomplish this task. I would give this book to my 25 y/o daughter. She is currently away at Pharmacy school, we talk or text everyday. She has Christ in her life. She has many struggles being so far away from home not seeing her family very much. She does attend church regularly, but knowing Him is more than going to church It’s actually living the Word as life unfolds day to day. She needs to have Christ completely in her life and I feel this book would help her understand the importance of that.

I would give this to my almost 18 year old daughter (July 10/13). She requires constant encouragement as I am a single mom with barely a “pot to pay out of”. She is doing pretty well, but boys appear more important than grades and God at this time. She continues her powerpoint assistance with the Church and that is a root for her. She had once asked we leave during a sermon and I said no. She never asked again. I would love for her to stay motivated to God first. That is what I’ve always said God, family then work.

The love, inspiration and information you’ve included in your book is so inspiring and written in a way the girls can say “I get it!” I’d love to share this with my girls. Having Jesus in their lives is an important rule and we try to follow it each day. God and Family above all things. I also have twin boys that I hope and pray each day that we are guiding the girls in the right direction and the boys will follow suit and learn as well. Peace & love. With Thanks.

Wow, tough question. I can think of so many young women in my life who would benefit from such a book, including my 2 daughters. However, I have a friend who has an immediate urgency for such a book in that her 14-yr old daughter is struggling with an eating disorder. We have had many conversations about her desire for her daughter to learn to let go of the “control” that seems to be the deeper issue with her eating disorder and to let God take control. I am looking forward to seeing this one on the bookshelves!

She is like a daughter to me and we miss each other very much. I see her about every 4-6 weeks. I would give the book to her. She will soon be 11. If it is too advanced for her now, she’ll grow into it soon! I worry that when she hits the teen years, she’ll really feel the pain of not having a Mother. I pray for her all the time and so grateful her Dad and she are in church. He is a good Dad.

I would hope that this will help give her tools to make the choices that are right for her & not just go with the flow of what everyone else is doing. I might even buy a few more copies to give to my nieces who are all around the age that could use something like this. I think that they would love it too.

    Hi Lysa,
Congratulations on your new book! I would love to have this book to give to a very special 14 year old girl. Her father is my husband’s close friend. She lives in the Arctic with her father, who is a truck driver. Her mother is not with her, a very difficult situation in her early childhood. She and her father recently came to visit us. And she is such an incredibly terrific girl. In a basically faithless small inuit community, she is so strong in her beliefs and convictions. Which enlightened me to the current situations that teen girls are dealing with. She is so mature for her age and such a level head on her shoulders. We had a few ‘girl’ moments which we both delighted in, her not having a mother and me raising two boys. We were going through my jewelry box and I gave her a ring I’d had. It is silver and says, True Love Waits. She was so excited to have it. She wears it every day. She has made so many positive choices in her life, and had to grow up quickly. I am so proud of her and would love to share your motherly girly wisdom of God with her.
    God Bless your work,
    Thank You!

I get so frustrated trying to find biblical reading materials for our 3 girls and 3 boys. All but our 8 year old are believers and working hard to resist the culture and follow hard after the lover of their souls. My 15 year old girl just finished reading your “More Than A Good Bible Study Girl”. I love your books and have bought 5 of them. I love the message you always bring to your books and I feel like I just had a wonderful conversation with a great friend who is encouraging me in my relationship with Christ. Thank you!!!

I work with young girls at my church and am in the process of planning our churches 7th Annual Girls Retreat. This book would be an inpsiration to one of girls that I find has grown through the years. Although she has accepted Christ she will need some better insight to reach her potential spiritual and personal goals! And my prayer is that once she has found what she needs and grows in Christ she will pass it on as she mentors young ladies later in her life.

I would give this book to my 18 year old daughter who is in her first year of college. She has grown up since birth very active in church and a beautiful christian girl, however, the temptations of “college life” have grabbed her attention. While she chases the world there have been those phone calls to momma about hard times and struggles. As I diligently pray for Godly friends and influences, God, droppes little angels into her life to get her mind to thinking about the path she is taking. Just a few days ago she called me about a friend she met who is a strong, focused Christian. She verbally admitted to me she has been feeling selfish and that she is not on God’s path for her life. I was thanking Jesus in that moment which reminded me she is under His constant provision because she belongs to him. I think this book would motivate her to reclaim her position in Christ.

I would give this book to my daughter. She is 22 years old and about to get married in 2 weeks. She and her finance are both Christians but I know that newly married couples tend to relax their church habits when newly married and out on their own together for the first time. She goes to church on a regular basis now but I want to reinforce to her how even more important it is to continue to live in Christ after she is married. I want her in a Christian household and this would be a great way to start the reinforcement as a continued way to live her life and by her doing that then her finance will continue also followed by their future children.

Thank you for your words. I’m a mother of an eleven month old baby boy. I’m already seeing the things he is learning simply by taking the time to teach him. My desire is also to stimulate his thought process to help him think for himself. I have an education degree and wholeheartedly believe lifelong learning, be it spiritual, emotional, cognitive development, etc., starts at home, by example. My prayer is to cultivate in him a desire to know Jesus and weigh his decisions against Biblical truths as I do the same.

I love to have resources on hand to give out when a need arises. I work heavily with our children’s department at my church and lead our Wednesday night programming with around 50 kids weekly. So for this book, if I were to receive it, I believe I know just the right young lady who needs to read it. She is struggling with a rough home life and being held back in school at a pivotal point in her development. She is beginning down a path I’m praying against including relationships with boys and struggles with image. In fact, I think she may need it regardless.

Thank you for your ministry! You’re influence, and God’s nudging, has inspired me to begin my own. Coming soon: JamieJoy.com Blessings!

This is so right on! I have raised my children and tried to instill this principle in them — that they needed to think through the consequences of their actions and own responsibility. It worked in some ways. It didn’t in others.

I have a 16-year-old granddaughter whose mom has not allowed her to get her driver’s license yet because she doesn’t exhibit enough responsible thought process. I love this idea about an assignment on the dangers of texting and driving. I’m going to pass this insight along to my daughter — who is having a little trouble in the letting go of the teenager department.

I would give this book to my granddaughter because I believe she knows Jesus, but it has been a while since she made her commitment and has walked out of the path. I’d like to have a way that isn’t Nana preaching or lecturing that will help her remember she is a child of the living God, and joint heir with Jesus. Which really does make her the beautiful and wonderful person I see her as.

Her family isn’t walking with the Lord, so the devotional might be a voice in a dry place for her. (Of course, that assumes she’ll read it.) 🙂

I have read it four times and recently included the importance this book had in my personal walk with the Lord when speaking to a women’s group about God’s story in my life. I just ordered the original book for my cousin and aunt who attended the Girls Night Out event I spoke at. My cousin has a 13 year old daughter I would give this book to. She could read it while her mom and Grandmother read the other one. I love to tell my story of what happened when I said Yes to God’s calling and Lysa’s book was such encouragement during that period of my life of learning the difference in a personal walk versus just having a belief/ religion.

I would give this book to my 18 year old daughter. She is a Christian but has gotten away from God. She goes to church but she is not trusting God right now. Her boyfriend which she claimed to love more than anything, committed suicide this past November. She had gotten away from God when she started dating him. She is still grieving and having a poor attitude toward a lot includng her parents. Especially me. I pray for her daily. And I do a lot of crying. I think if she read this book, it could help her a lot.

I would LOVE to give this book to my, soon to be, 20 year old daughter. She is in her semester year of college and 4 1/2 hours away from her family/church. I pray daily for Godly people to enter her life and invest in her like she is investing in others. Being surrounded by temptation, trying her best to minister to those around has left her cup empty…she needs to be filled. Your books have helped change me through your relatable approach to scripture, your transparency and your unbelievable loving way you speak truth! I would love to share your work with her and watch the amazing way God will work in her life as well!

My daughter is 17 years old and about to graduate from high school and leave home this fall for college. I would love nothing better than to send a copy of this book with her so she can refer to it when she encounter situations that make her question her spirituality and morals as she goes through the trials and tribulations of her first year away from home. As you said in today’s reading, we as parents can’t be there for every difficult situation our children face. We have to give them the best tools we can and hope they apply them to the job properly! I trust her immensely, but I know she will face all the situations a young person faces in their first year of college and being away from home for an extended period for the first time. I’d love to give her your book.

Teaching my kids to think is just what I needed today! My daughter is away at college and is starting to date. We had an intense conversation about it and I “happened” to read a scripture about letting go after I have taught her; that it is God who causes her to will and to do (something to that effect, but I got the point). I would give the book to my daughter.

First, I would read the book myself. I am still somewhat a “young” woman (26) & I think taking in as much godly wisdom & instruction as I can is incredibly important. Then when my daughter is a little older I would read it to her, and keep it for her to read on her own once she is old enough to & fully understand it. I can think of a friends daughter I would let borrow it as well! 🙂

Lysa, I would read your new book with my 19 year old precious daughter of whom I asked the LORD today, really? After the hardest-trial-year yet she was betrayed by college friends today. She called me and stoically shared but then the tears flowed. My heart is breaking for her. Fear creeps in about her future, our future … she doesn’t want to be six hours away at college; she didn’t want to leave a Daddy with stage three cancer, a brother with medical challenges, and a Mama left to pack due to foreclosure. She didn’t want to start her freshman year with a devastating facial disease that began suddenly during a mission trip a few months before orientation. But she said, “Yes, Lord.” So I again shared Genesis 50:20 and we’re choosing to believe the character of our LORD and Savior—Jehovah Jirah. God bless you, Lysa and Hope … xo

I would give this book to my 13 year old daughter because she is an avid reader who has been pondering lately about the deeper things in life. As an overprotective mom who wanted to make up where I was lacking when I was a child, I am now learning that I need to let my children fail in order to grow. This is a HARD lesson to live out, but a necessary one. I want them to know that they can make it through their struggles in life, and to learn to lean on God. I believe this book could really make an impact on my daughter as she is learning to navigate life as an adolescent.

Thank you Lisa for your insightful blog on ‘The most important lesson’. I am a mother of 3, my eldest being 18yrs old now. It has been my journey with my middle daughter, 10years old, suffering anxiety, that has woken me up to my natural habit of rescuing and my need to be needed. Together we are now working as a family to resource and equip our children rather than to solve their problems.

I would give your new book to a 20 year old girl I have been mentoring over the past few years. She has just begun mentoring a younger teenage girlfriend. I would give this book to my 13 year old cousin. She spent a few weeks this past summer visiting my husband and I at our home. She had questions about God, but said she was afraid to persue anything because her parents and older brother are atheists and she feels like she would somehow be betraying them to question their beliefs. We took her to our church and tried to model what a Christian home with two parents looks like (something she was quite baffled by – she didn’t understand why my husband and I didn’t scream at each other when we were upset, and why I consulted with him on decisions that needed to be made. We even had a conversation about why I would not divorce him…even if he “annoyed” me…divorce to her is like breaking up with a boyfriend). She lives with her mom who is divorced from her dad, whom she doesn’t get along with or respect. Her mother expects her to parent herself most days leaving her alone at home…many nights while my cousin was visiting, she explained how much she wished her mom would just pay attention to her and support the things she wanted to be involved in, like cheerleading and dance. She’s not allowed to be involved in activities that would interrupt her moms schedule. Her dad financially supports most anything my cousin wants to do, but her mother has no respect for her father and has taught her daughter that she doesn’t have to respect him either. I’d love for her to have a way to learn more about God and how she can have a relationship with Him, even if her parents aren’t supporting her and taking her to church. I’d love for her to see that her life has value and grow up to be different than the character that her mother models for her.

I would LOVE to read it myself and have it on hand to pass around to the young singles, newleyweds’ or new mothers that God continues to put my way. God is mentoring these women , using my feable frame (as i watch in awe-being born again 9 short years)My church-which consists mostly of the “unchurched “with the mission statement -Loving those far from God and moving them to life in Christ ,is always in need of resources . With two “littles”(4 yrs and 9 months) I’m limited on time and cash to access more resources and uninterupted time to minister one on one to all. Passing this book to them would be a wonderful opportunity and great tool to have. I could always use the Godly direction.I’ve already hosted your “unglued” study and found that transforming! Thank you for all that you do for us young women! God is good, and faithful isn’t he?!

They have very few financial resources and a steep hill to climb in the way of challenges, but with God walking hand in hand with them, anything and everything is possible. Our daughter invited them to church with her last week and they all had a wonderful experience. They’ve agreed to go again this week! Small but important steps. I would give your new book to my precious 19 yr old daughter, Alexis.. She has just recently said yes to God by moving 2.5 hrs away to live with her Dad, step-mom & 9 kids. Her half-sister tried to commit suicide and it just ripped Alexis’ heart out that her sister felt there was no hope because she didn’t know Jesus. Alexis felt the spirit prompting her to pack up and go to share the love of Christ with her other family which she has spent very little time with over the last 17 yrs. Despite he own anxiety issues she has been work with God on to overcome, she just did it through the fear. I am such a proud Momma and praise & pray to God daily for his His will. Although, Alexis feels she is in the right place it isn’t exactly comfortable and she is in need of sisters & brothers in Christ. She’s looking for the right church & bringing along those in the family there that are interested in knowing more about this God she keeps speaking of 🙂 God doesn’t normally call us into perfect circumstances and she is realizing that but holding tight to her faith and God’s promises through the struggles. I think your new book would be so encouraging & insperational for her during this season in her life along with preparin her to say YES again to he faithful God.

God bless you for sharing your gifts wih us Lysa,
    Jenny

You inspire me and anxious to read your new book. I would, FIRST, give this book to myself as I am thirsty for God’s presence and learning more about what happens when I continue to say YES to God. I will then pass along the book to the women that comes to mind most while reading it and encourage that person to do the same. Kinda like pay it forward as we all say YES to God, I am sure He will illuminate us on who needs the book most.

I’d give the book to my precious daughter who is trying to follow Christ as a teen and seeing how mean people in the world can be. She is so caring and compassionate and it’s hard to see her learn these tough lessons but at the same time I’m seeing how strong her faith is.

Dearest Lisa, my daughter met a young woman in college who has become one of her close friends. We have been sharing the Lord with her and both committed to prayer on her behalf. She has had a difficult childhood, her dad abondoned her mom when she was a baby, her now stepfather has been physically abusive, and she struggles with finding love, and herself has entered into wrong relationships and continues to get hurt. She overdosed once while in college on alcohol and now this coming week is entering rehab for pill abuse. I would love to gift her your book while she is in rehab. She just shared with my daughter that she needs to get her life right with “God”. What she truly needs is to fall in love with the Lord. Thank you for considering me.

I would give this book to my precious friend Lynn, because she has 2 lovely daughters, one how graduated 2 years ago and one who is now a senior. They lost their young father in death almost 5 years ago. Both have a strong faith in God, but both have stuffed their feelings and I feel this book would direct them to the open door where our Heavenly Father would be allowed to pour out HIs healing upon them. They are both physically beautiful and have many talents, neither has done the dating scene.

I would give this book to my daughter, Sidney, who is turning 13 in a few short months. She is a beautiful lady inside and out and my desire is for her to know God and to chose to live her life for Him. To understand that no person can complete her, only God can. I love your post about teaching kids to think for themselves – I try to do that with Sidney. She is so smart and I see her fixing problems before I even have a chance to offer suggestions! I know going into the next several years will be tough for her with all the pressures out there and I know if God is who she turns to for guidance and love and how to live her life, she will become an amazing woman. I want her worth and value to come from God so it never waivers in her mind and heart. So much hurt and trauma can be avoided if girls truly understood just how loved, cherished, valued and important they are to God. I am excitedly awaiting the day she gives her heart completely to God and chooses to live for Him and through Him.

I would give this book to my daughter Justice who is a junior this year and we are looking at colleges and what she wants to be. My prayer for her is that she follow hard after God’s heart. These next few years are really important in decision making and I pray that she is listening and seeking the plans He has for her life.

I would share the book with my 12-year-old daughter. She is at a vulnerable age, learning what it means to be a woman, a Christian, and a member of this particular family. Is it possible to hold true to her identity and her beliefs in the midst of a culture where “religion” and particularly “Christianity” are words to be ashamed of rather than claimed?

I want her to walk in Jesus’s steps, and I know this book will help. If we don’t win a copy, I’ll be purchasing one! 🙂

As a senior in college, I am beginning to realize just how beautifully God is working everything in my life together for my good, for hope, and for my future all because I had the courage to say yes to Him at a young age when I realized that I would need His help to ever even have a chance to follow my dreams. I know now that HIs plan is even greater than any dream that I can fathom. I would like to give a copy of your book to my little sister who turns seventeen tomorrow, so she might experience the same beautiful blessing of God’s love that I have had the chance to know in my life. Thank you for all of the blessings that you pass along through your work.

I came to your blog today to prepare for my day as a teacher…. and your thoughts were the same thoughts I plan to present to my students. I have been teaching the theory of evolution to them… and my whole goal is to get them thinking for themselves and to own their own beliefs. As a public school teacher, I cannot denounce many of the modern ideas and teach that God created it all, but I an teach this understanding through how I present the material. My goal is to get my students to think through the facts for themselves and teach them HOW to think.

IF I were to have your book, I would put it in my classroom collection of books that kids can borrow when they’re struggling. I wouldn’t just give it to one of them, it would get many uses. I do this as a ministry that allows conversations to open up as I try to be a light in the darkness for so many hurting kids. I used the “What Happens when Women Say Yes to God” book in one of my studies with kids last year and am thrilled to have a book to use that will speak to them on an even deeper level.

Thanks for the post! I would give your book to my 9 yr old daughter because the title reflects my deepest desire for all 3 of my girls. I desire that they always say “yes” to God. No matter the trials they face in life and whatever their circumstances. I pray that they will say, “Ok God, Your will not mine.” As adults, we have all been there and at times it is so hard to surrender. I want to grow in faith alongside my daughters and we will all continue to say “yes” to the only one who saves and knows us better than we know ourselves.

good morning and blessings! I have never done this before, so bear with me please. I am just beginning my own journey of faith, and would like to share this with my daughters. Sometimes, I am learning that it is not what I say to them that makes an impact, but what I share with them, what I tell them about what I have struggled with, that seems to make a difference. My children are bombarded each and every day in this wonderful world of ours with challenges, joys, decisions, and chances…I can only hope to be a faith filled role model…this is my goal, and I thank you for letting me learn from your experiences. Thank you, Marie

I would give the book to a girl name Michele. She is in the youth group I help with at church. God got ahold of her heart a few years back. Lysa, I would give this book to my 15 year old niece. She has not gorwn up in the best environment and she is so earger to find love. My sister is a wonderful mother, but she is in a marriage that has been touch and go to say the least for most of it’s 20 years. My niece has had to live with watching her mother be demeaned and put down for years until there is nothing left of her self esteem. She has the impression that love has to hurt and that being treated that way is acceptable. I have tried talking to her and taking her to church with me, as have my parents, but now that she has her first boyfriend, I am concerned that she will give herself over to thinking that she has found the love that she desires in this boy, rather than finding the ultimate love in Christ. Even if I do not get the book, please pray for this young teenage girl that she will realize what true love is.

She has a heart for Jesus but hasn’t yet learned how to fully trust Him with life’s ups and downs. She has many gifts and talents but fear keeps her from experiencing them to the fullest. Even if she is not chosen for your book would you please keep her in prayer? She is experiencing such anxiety in this transition of military life to civilian life. She is a stay at home mom of 3 precious babies and her husband Ryan does not have a job lined up as of yet. I would give this book to my 14 year old daughter. We didn’t accept Christ in our hearts until she was 9 years old so thiis has been something she’s been struggliing with, and with the peer pressure of others at school it makes it even more difficult for her. She has actually accepted Christ as her savior but it’s is like she is in denial that she needs God. No matter how many times my husband and I tell her she needs to put her life in his hands and trust in him, it’s like she doesn’t listen. She loves to read and if she could read this book I think it would be great for her to see the affects of what acceping Chris in your heart can do.

A friend and I have recently started a “Girls Only” group at our church for teenage girls, in addition to their regular youth group. At our second meeting last week, the floodgates of candid honesty came barreling open, and we experienced a small group like I’ve never partaken of in my lifetime of ministry! In their short lives, many of these girls have already lived unspeakable heartbreak, no woman should ever have to endure, but they have given their life to Christ, and have the chance to change the course the enemy set for them. But we need help in this ministry!! I had heard about your new book, and was just searching for it this morning, when I read your blog post and this give away! Please consider us for this book. Also, she IS a young woman totally give to the LORD, and I just want to encourage her in her calling. She lost her way with The Lord a while back and came I to drugs which caused her to roll her car with her two babies in the back seat (ages 4 and 6) who wore seatbelts but weren’t in chip safety seats. Her 6 year old baby girl was killed instantly and her 4 year old son is now paralyzed. I believe this will help her find her new path in The Lord. I’d like to try to be her mentor and help guide her towards a brighter path. She needs to feel the lords presence again. God Bless!
