10 Ways to Graciously Say No When You Feel Pressured to Say Yes

September 16, 2014

I knew the request was unrealistic. My brain cued all the right signals for my mouth to say no. But somewhere between the sinking feeling in my heart of how this would affect my relationship with this person and the pressure of her expectations for me to agree to her request, I blurted out, “Yes, of course!”

I said yes when I absolutely, positively knew I should say no!

And I have a feeling I’m not the only one who has this scenario play out in their lives over and over.

I know I’m caught in the rip current of people pleasing when I dread saying yes but feel powerless to say no. I said that during my last webcast and the questions about how to say no started flooding in through Twitter.

People described the deep guilt they experience when they say no. Others admitted to constantly feeling at the mercy of everyone’s requests and, because of not saying no, they were completely worn out. One pastor’s wife admitted to being in a position where she wasn’t sure saying no was even an option for her out of fear of damaging her husband’s ministry.

And another thanked me for giving voice to the struggle many of us have wrestled through silently for years.

I understand because I have and still do wrestle with saying no.

And please understand I’m not advocating that we should always say no. But I am advocating that we should sometimes say no.

Now lean in and let me whisper something I’m trying desperately to teach myself,

No isn’t a cuss word.

It doesn’t have to be hurtful. You will survive and so will they.

Saying no is not a rejection. It’s a necessary protection of your Best Yes answers.

So, here are 10 ways to graciously say no when you feel pressured to say yes:

Personal:

1. While my heart wants to say yes, yes, yes, the reality of my time makes this a no.

2. I am honored by your request but I’m in a season of refocusing my priorities and have committed not to add anything new right now.

3. After living at an unhealthy breakneck pace for too long, I’m learning to realistically assess my capacity. Though I would love to say yes, the reality of my limitations means I must say no this time.

4. I so appreciate you asking me, but I must be brave and decline this opportunity. Saying no is hard for me but necessary in this season. Thank you for understanding.

5. I’ve promised my family not to add any new commitments to my schedule right now. Thank you for our friendship that allows me to be honest with my realities.

Professional:

6. Thank you for thinking of me. Your project sounds wonderful. However, as much as I would love to be involved, I can’t give your project the attention it deserves right now.

7. While I would love to connect about your new project, I’ve discovered this is one of those activities I must give up while trying to ____________________ (write my book, start my business, stick to my project, etc.) Saying yes would just enable my unhealthy habit of procrastination. Thank you for understanding and helping me push through to the finish line.

8. There is nothing more that I love than helping others in my field get started. Unfortunately, I get so many requests for this that I’m no longer able to meet in person. So, I’ve created this attached document with my best advice. (Create a standard PDF for instances like this so you only have to type out your advice one time.)

9. While I don’t have time for a lunch appointment, I’d love to connect for a few minutes over the phone. I can talk from 8-8:30am.

10. Thank you so much for caring enough about me to want my involvement. Unfortunately, I’m not able to participate this time. But I’m certainly cheering for your continued success.

Thank you Lysa for the advice on how to politely say No. The “Yes” syndrome seems to take over when in reality we want to respectfully decline. I’m learning yet still have to work on it. 🙂

I’m excited about the bible study. There are so many times I’ve been faced with having to choose “yes” or “no” and really truly not knowing what’s the right thing to do. It can be so difficult. Thanks for the ten ways to say “No” graciously. They are very helpful. I have found that the best reason to say “no” to someone’s request is because I am unable to give it the time and energy it truly deserves. It’s not fair to anyone involved — the requester, the recipients or me. I have found that while people may not like my answer, they truly appreciate the honesty and concern it conveys.

Thanks for all you do, Lysa! You are an amazing women and wonderful example to us all. God bless you!

I love these answers for “no” and will definitely tuck them away in my mind for those moments. I’ve learned that busy people are most often asked to do more, because people think that busy people know how to get things done. I wish instead that this busy momma could have a permanent sign on her head that says, “Please don’t ask me to add anything else to the chaos.” 🙂 I am so excited to begin this study with P31 OBS as a ministry volunteer and as a participant…because Lord knows I need the un-rush and find my best yes!

Good morning! I’ve just signed up for the free online ‘Best Yes’ Bible Study. Love the idea of saying ‘no’. I remember hearing that “No.” is a complete sentence. With that in mind it gives me the focus to graciously say ‘no’ even to close friends, without offering excuses that they try to find their way around. It’s natural to want to share something your enjoy with your friends, and some will push and push for me to join them in some endeavor or even a fun excursion, and can’t accept ‘excuses’. The surprised look when I smile and say, “No, thanks for asking, tho’. You guys have a great time. Bye, now.”

I am signed up and ready to go! This is my first online bible study, so I’m not really sure what I’m in for, but excited nonetheless. My husband and I recently started attending a wonderful church in our community that is meeting needs we didn’t even realize we had! He had been out of church for 30 years, me for 10, and since our marriage 2 years ago, have never attended church together. So before we walked through the doors that very first Sunday, I told my husband, “No matter what happens in here – do NOT let me volunteer for anything. I mean it. You don’t understand. Just don’t.” I’ve gotta find that balance!!

I am signed up for your online Bible study. I believe this is something we all struggle with because it is our nature to help and give and serve. For me, I struggle with the guilt of saying no, and how to say it in a way that others will know I would help if I had time, but now isn’t good for me. I also struggle when I say no, and I am met with, “but I promise it will not involve a lot of your time, we really need you” or I am put on the spot in front of others. I would love the extra copy of your book, I am involved in a community where we are reaching out to bring our community to know Gods Word and guide them into faith, and show them how life can be different in walking along side God. I can’t wait for this study!

I have signed up for this study and have purchased the Kindle book and even the Audible audio version. Just yesterday on my 54th birthday I called it quits to a group I’d been hosting for almost 11 years. The fun had went out of it for me—-not for the other ladies who got the full benefits of it for all these years—-so I opted to give up the stress and frustration that was my part and say NO, I’m not doing this anymore. How freeing!! I felt the tension between my shoulder blades disappear as soon as I made my announcement! I’m looking forward to reading your new book and participating in this study!

I am so incredibly excited (and absolutely anxious at the same time!) about navigating through this study. Learning how to gracefully be more purposeful with my time, resources and the boundaries that contain them is such an intentional effort for me, when naturally helping others is what makes my heart go pitter pat. It has been a long suffering love kind of passion that has left me feeling like I might just unravel at the seams at times, and pausing to invite God into the journey has been just as intentional as learning how to better understand what it means to serve where I’m called as opposed to the desire to serve wherever I’m pulled. This study is going to be a great tool in taking that understanding to an even deeper level!

Thank you for these helpful sentences on how to say .. no. The Lord has had me in a “heads down” position for almost 2 months now focusing on some things that He has not been pleased with in me. It has seemed contradictory to say no I can’t come to your Bible study to get prayer… I have to be OBEDIENT and stay home put on some worship and clean out a drawer or journal or whatever He asks of me. But I am NOT to be running all over the place for other people right now. It is hard. I am such a people person! But He who has started a good work in me … will complete it! (paraphrased of course)

I have already started emailing and graciously telling people ‘no”. You are right, my heart screams yes yes yes. But, I cling to this verse to help me choose what I need to say “yes” to! I use to have a selfish ambition to get ahead just for a credential or “my name u lights.” Jesus has softened my heart and I’m reminded that it’s not about me, it’s about how I can share the love of God through Jesus Christ.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather in humility value others above yourself, not looking to your own interests, but each of you to the interest of others.”
    Philippians 2:3-4

God Bless you Lysa. You really have no idea how you inspire and motivate.

I would love to win the book to share with friends!!i would also like to add this thought about saying no. Perhaps that we would also add in that we will about and for the one God would have to say yes. I know that many of us are making best yes choices between two and three good assignments that God does have a person in mind for and they may need courage to say yes or they may just need to follow His lead.

I have to thank you for putting words to my feelings. I just started reading your book to prepare for the online study and I keep thinking this is exactly what I would say if I wrote a book. This came at just the right time in my life- I am overwhelmed with a treasurers position on the PTA and was afraid to step down until someone else stepped up. Well…. people are beating down my door to be treasurer but I made the jump and I am stepping down tonight. I have been having panic attacks over the responsibility and amount of work involved with this. Also, because of some personality issues it’s just not a place I want to be. I feel like it is sucking all the joy out of my soul. My mother died recently and I haven’t taken the time to fully grieve that loss and I need to say no to things that aren’t allowing me to take care of myself and my family and find more joy in my life. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

Doesn’t mean I won’t purchase a copy in the near future – because I am a shameless Lysa T fan!! – it just means I’m not going to do it right now. Sometimes having healthy boundaries means sacrificing something. But, perhaps there will be a season in the future that will be a better fit.

I can’t wait to read this book! I love your way of connecting with us as women, wives, mothers. I feel as if you are sitting on my couch with me having a conversation. I am looking forward to how God will use this book to continue to grow me more into the woman He created me to be. One of my greatest challenges and question to you is, ” How do you handle opposition?” When you have confirmation in the Lord that you are choosing as He has called you to and you get opposition form those you would expect would encourage and support. I often feel I am fighting against so much opposition I am exhausted. I hear the cries of others going through very difficult times and my heart breaks and ministers the truth of God’s love to them. Then many turn and oppose or challenge the call God has put on my life to put family first. As a woman, wife and mother I often feel the most opposition, lack of support and encouragement from other women; both believing an non-believing. Do you address this in your book? If not may be the next one! Thank you so much for ALL of your support and encouragement and strong biblical; Godly teaching.

    Lisa,
I have signed up for the study, then received your challenge to invite someone. I prayed about who the Lord would like me to invite, and this morning I invited my daughter to join us in this study. Being newly married, with a daughter of her own under a year old, a full time job, and the wonderful news that another baby is on the way, not to mention a home they are remodeling, and the desire to satisfy a large extended family and friends, I hope she accepts the invitation to join. She is a grown woman, too old (and not yet old enough) to desire advice from her mother; however, advice from God is always welcome! If I should win the book, it is going to my daughter, whether she joins the on line study or not. Wisdom from God’s word is a precious gift, sometimes put into practice right away, other times tucked away and drawn upon later. Either way, I know this book will bless her.

It spoke to me in a way, no one else has been able to do, so I struggle with saying no to where those closest to me deal with the stress and underwhelmed relationships because I know they love me unconditionally. I am feeling burned out and struggling with saying Yes to an organization I am EXTREMELY passionate about, but am not sure if I can manage the additional work load.

Sometimes, it really is hard saying “No”, but I like how you respond in such love and tact.
But, I also know it is harder when you do not get a response from other people, especially while planning a Women’s event or other activities.
Well, if I receive one of your books I will send one to my sister. She really has a big schedule and three kids to take care of. I have your book and really like it. Thank you. in Christ

    Hi Lysa!!!
I have enjoyed all of your information that you have posted online!! I have learned so much valuable information that applies to my life. I am so excited to start your bible study, The Best Yes. I feel God has directed me to your emails/blog site because saying “yes” when I need/want to say “no” has been the cause of a lot of my conflicts in life and has therefore allowed me to be controlled and manipulated by those around me. I have lost my self esteem and feel as though I cower to anyone that pressures me, kids, husband, family etc. I really hope I receive the free book! I am a single parent struggling right now financially, emotionally and spiritually and as of 2 weeks ago physically! I broke my jaw and my mouth is wired shut for 6 weeks which does not allow me to work because I am on the phone all day and now cannot talk! Please pray for my faith to be strong so that I don’t fall into that “feeling sorry for myself or why me” mode. thank you and I am so excited to start the bible study!!! 🙂

Thanks for the suggestions for gracious ways to say no. It can be so difficult. I have found that with a few people, I have to just say no without explanation or reasons. That just gives them more reason to argue. I used to cave if I said “no” but they still insisted. I’m learning to do better about that- not always successful!

I love the heart behind this post and the book. But, as a ministry leader I would caution that any response that feels over-rehearsed can feel like a pat answer. The heart behind each of these is dead on. I would encourage anyone reading them to find a way to out the idea into your own word. I were to say, “While my heart wants to say yes, yes, yes, the reality of my time makes this a no.” anybody that knows me would know that theyjust got brushed off.

    5. I’ve promised my family not to add any new commitments to my schedule right now. Thank you for our friendship that allows me to be honest with my realities.

The first sentence of number 5 is good, but the second sentence just isn’t anything I would ever say.

Saying NO can be very difficult and I encourage anyone to give it some thought. Be prepared to tell people no. Consider the reasons why you need to say no to certain projects/tasks. Then speak truth from these reasons, in love. If you have a firm grasp on why you should be saying no, why other things are more important than others, why certain priorities in your life outrank others, THEN you can communicate to others from your heart and avoid sounding like you stood in front of the mirror rehearsing your response.

I would love to win this book. I heard on KLOVE the other morning about learning that saying yes ALL the time and people pleasing is not what Christians are called to do. Even if it feels like we are letting others down we are called to listen to God’s voice and use his guidance and not let what others think of us hinder our journey. I would love to dive deep into this book and learn to slow down, surrender to God and learn how to say the Best Yes to glorify him!

For so many years I’ve been the woman you described. I never said No. I became so despondent with the overwhelming needs of others that I totally lost sight of me. It took my own mental and physical crash to force me to deal with taking care of me. By that time, I had enabled those I love to the point that it was virtually impossible to make this necessary break in everyone’s habits. I’m better now, but I know how close I could be to returning to my past behaviors and start this vicious cycle again. I have to keep reminding myself this is a much healthier way to live. I also have to keep a careful watch over my attitude and ensure my responses are appropriate for the situation. It would be so easy to lash out at others under the guise of sticking to my “say no” approach. It’s a tricky road.

I have been asking God for some balanced in my life between family, church, ministry and work. Saying yes all the time and not being to say no without having to feel guilty is sometimes hard to do but your tips on how to graciously say no in a loving way without feeling like you might hurt someone’s feelings or let them down is exactly what I needed. I know that “The Best Yes” Bible Study will enlighten me how to overcome making the hard choice to making the best choice with the Godly wisdom that our Father has given us and to slow down in all our busy lives.

I am so grateful to have come across this today. Something told me to go to your site this morning and now I know it was God. I have always loved your practical teachings. Thank you for the suggestions on how to say no. I was literally looking for a blog post about this one week ago. God bless you Lysa!

I’m sure the book giveaway is probably over, but if it’s not I would love to win a copy. I’m in a season right now where I feel like my servants heart is broken. My dad is dying of brain cancer. I’m his sole caregiver and responsible for all the arrangements from here until the end. Which is a wide range of any day now, until up the possibility of maybe 4 months left. I’m extremely active in My church between youth group, hospitality, cook, prayer team coordinator, and many more……Which I typically love, but between my life and kids, and my husband working full time on the road to pay for the impending funeral, and all the church activities and just all the things I feel obligated to say yes to….my heart feels weighed down and barely able to serve with love. I feel like I’m serving with a heart full of regret. I feel like I’m falling apart inside and cannot deal with it on the outside for fear of who I will let down. I feel like I am mostly letting down God…..and that is an awful feeling. I appreciate women like you and your wisdom. Thank you for all you do, God Bless.

This is genius. Downright brilliant. Thank you. I’m going to be sharing this with clients I work with in a therapy setting so they can be empowered to say No as they want to do. I will credit you, of course. 🙂

Nice read, while I think you we need to say NO more than we say YES to 3rd party request, I strongly disagree that there is a need to explain the NO.

I have been plagued by people with all sorts of reasons why if I didn’t lend them money at the time, they would die and all the promises on earth to pay back. To date, some of them have stopped taking my calls.

Now when I new request comes, I don’t wait for some of them to finish, I shake my head and say, “I’m sorry, I can’t”, if they insist, I let them know, “I do not appreciate the pressure you are trying to put on me with your request, I simply cannot do it.”

As rude and as difficult as it may seem, you’ll feel like an achiever a few moments afterwards.

Reading your devotion this morning really impressed upon me the fact that it’s ok to say, “No.” I have lived most of my life trying to please others when in fact the one I need to be pleasing is The Lord! Thank you for sharing your story. It hits home with me!

This was a great devotion today. I need to have this information in front of me everyday. I feel completely frazzled because I over do it and I don’t say no enough.
