Last week my family took a little vacation at a family camp in upstate New York. We had such a blast just hanging out with Holly’s family, being goofy, playing four-square, and picking our teeth.
Okay, the picking the teeth thing was just something little Brooke did but it sure did make a funny family memory.
One night Art took Holly’s husband, Dan, and all our boys fishing. They weren’t back by dinner so I fixed Art a plate from the dining hall and decided to let the boys get pizza from the snack shop. Once back at the cabin, I placed Art’s plate of food on the dresser with a napkin draped across it and a plastic fork on top.
I smiled. My man would be happy.
A few minutes later I saw Brooke picking her teeth with a plastic fork.
Then she reached down and used the fork to scratch her leg. “Um Brooke, where did you get that fork?”
“Off that plate,” she smiled.
“Brooke, we don’t pick our teeth and scratch our legs with Daddy’s dinner fork,” I said while trying to hide my smile.
It was at this point I totally intended to make sure the fork got thrown away and replaced with another fork. But, I got distracted. Oh dear, dear, dear… I totally got distracted.
Half way through Art eating his dinner, I remembered the history of the plastic fork. I couldn’t help but get a serious case of inappropriate laughter disorder.
You know what they say, the family that picks their teeth together, stays together. Right?
Okay, time for show and tell. And if you usually read my blog through your email, you’ll want to visit www.LysaTerKeurst.com to see the pictures.

Love the story! What Precious Memories you have made….Thanks for sharing the pictures…Both of you have been blessed with beautiful families.
Is that an Alabama shirt I see on your man? He’s so smart. LOL
hee hee. Too funny!
So glad you guys had a great time together! I know your families are probably still rejoicing over Holly’s hubby getting a job that did not require them to move far away!
And the pictures are so great! What sweet memories to treasure…plastic fork and all.
That gave me a much needed giggle th!is morning
Love the pictures! Thanks for sharing a little of your vacation with us.
I was tickled when Hope posted pictures on her facebook….and I’m so glad you’ve shared too. Love that Brooke! Looking forward to seeing you and the rest of your group super soon. Can’t believe it’s less than two weeks!!!
Oh so happy to see the pix!! Looks like a wonderful week! I am sure Holly and her family love COTW too! We went last week and it was a heat wave…almost 100 every day…and you know there is no air conditioning there! Holly said y’all had a cool week. Either way, COTW is a special place.
Here’s to s’mores and zip lining,
Sharon
Looks like a great trip. What fun. I admire that you & Holly are not only working buddies, but work-out buddies, and playing buddies. True “BFFs.” (Best Friends Forever.)
Great pictures; Thanks for sharing. One thing I want to know is, does Art know about the fork? Soooo funny!!!! Have a blessed day!
Thanks for the laugh this morning…and for sharing the pics. I also have to know…does Art know the “history” of the fork?
Have a blessed day!
You made me laugh! But, I have to join the crowd & ask whether you told Art about the fork? Come on, girl, don’t leave us in suspense!
What a great weekend!!! I love family getaways! Especially when you can share them with another great family! “Thank you Lord for our BFF’s!” I think you are exactly right…a family that picks their teeth together… LOL!
Have a blessed week!
You must have a great time. I envy you. I wish I have a friend like that to go vacation with.
How fun! (Not the teeth picking part but the vacation!) Upstate NY is a beautiful area. And I’m totally jealous of the fishing! I haven’t been in years.
What an adorable bunch!
Thanks for the funny story and beautiful pictures of your family vacation. Can you please continue to pray for me? Thanks!
I just have to ask if you were at Camp of the Woods. My husband’s family have spent many summers up there. Great speakers as well.
Looks like a GREAT time!!! That was fun seeing the pics!
I love family camp! We go on Labor Day weekend and it’s such a blast. Love the pic of the kids on the back of the train and how the girls are all posing w/ their hands on their hips and the boys are just standing there. Lol, guys & girls are so different! Beautiful families.
Oh and poor Art! Reminds me of when I first started blogging a few years ago and was downstairs, probably reading your blog when I saw our dog Kane run through the basement with our dinner in his mouth. Unlike Art, Gene was aware Kane had the whole chicken in his mouth and dropped it on the dirty floor and he still ate it. His words went something like, “Dog hair and dirt never hurt anyone”. So gross.
Lisa, I love this story and your “rainbow” family! God Bless!
Love the photos Lysa! How wonderful that you had a great time away with your family and best friend.
Blessings,
Jodie
Lysa, I went to your website because you are going to be speaking in my hometown next January and the gal organizing it suggested we do your Bible study prior to that. I have read one of your books and have heard you on the radio many times and so look forward to hearing you next January. When I got to your site your entry including your vacation which i immediately recognized as Camp of the Woods (our favorite place on earth) which we just returned from this past Saturday. I knew you had been there the week before because one of our friends found something in their cabin with your daughter’s name on it. They live in Charlotte and know you. How cool they were in your cabin next. We DID have a VERY hot week and I heard you had a very cool one. You just never know what you will get up there but it’s wonderful no matter the weather. God Bless!
Hi Lysa, it’s an honor to meet YOU, and YOUR family, at Camp of the Woods. My daughter(Gianna) still up to now remembers Brooke and Ashley. I finally read your book The Bathtub is Overflowing, But I feel Drained, thank you for writing this, It is so realistic with so much Spirituality! I’m going to read it all over again, NOW with the devotionals!
